CU's Cameron Way knocked in the game-winning run in the bottom of the seventh.
Another Walk-Off Win: Cavs Beat Jessup 2-1
MEDFORD, Ore.—Trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the seventh, Cameron Way hit a two-out walk-off two-run single to defeat William Jessup 2-1 at the Southern Oregon Tournament held at US Cellular Park on Thursday.
After Concordia (5-0) left the bases loaded in the bottom of the first, William Jessup (4-5) scored its only run in the second with some small-ball tactics. Audrea Lopez opened the frame with a single to centerfield and was immediately moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Jackie Ferrari. Lopez scattered to third on a wild pitch and was delivered home on a grounder to second base from Liz Benton.
Concordia pitcher Danielle Pulfrey kept the Warriors off the board the rest of the way, allowing just two hits and a solo walk while tossing eight strikeouts in the complete game effort to help setup the seventh-inning dramatics.
Stretching to beat the throw, Courtney Wooden jump started the seventh with a single to shortstop. Following a foul territory popup to the catcher for the first out, leadoff hitter Kayla Vickaryous reached on an error from WJU left fielder to give the Cavs runners at first and second.
William Jessup starter Brianna Melgard produced a non-swinging strikeout to get the Warriors to within an out of victory. Down to the team’s last strike, Ali Paz belted a shot towards the left side with Vickaryous sliding into second a split second before the lob from Lopez, the WJU shortstop, to load the bases for Cameron Way.
With only the fourth ball to leave the infield for the Cavs, Way connected for a single to right field to plate Vickaryous and Tara Baglai, who pinch ran for Wooden. The victory was the third win in the final at bat in five games for Concordia this season.
Concordia matched William Jessup with only two hits in the game until the final frame where the Cavs added a trio of singles.
The Warriors threatened to add a run in the top of the seventh with a one-out walk and a stolen base from Lopez, but the junior infielder was caught trying to steal third by Wooden, the CU catcher.
Melgard allowed five hits and issued four walks while striking out six in the loss.
Concordia returns to action on Friday with a pair of contests against Cal Pac schools. The Cavs get started early with a 9 a.m. tilt against Holy Names and remain on the field for an 11a.m. game against Concordia –Irvine.
