Bailey Price had three hits in the second game of today's doubleheader.
Raiders Drop Season Opening Doubleheader
Despite hitting the ball well, the Southern Oregon softball team couldn't capitalize and dropped its season-opening doubleheader at Vanguard University today.
The Lions won the opener 3-1 and then held off the Raiders 3-2 in the nightcap.
Southern Oregon travels to 20th-ranked CSU San Marcos tomorrow.
"We hit the ball well," SOU head coach Kim Fritts said. "We just couldn't keep it out of the air and the wind was really blowing in so that really hurt us."
In the opener, senior Justine Fulton had the lone SOU run with a solo home run in the seventh inning. Sophomore Jordyn Kurtz struck out three, allowing seven hits in her first action of the year.
In the nightcap, Southern Oregon got on the board early after Meghan Laughlin scored on a Bailey Price single and an error in the third inning. In the bottom of the frame, the Lions tied the game and then took the lead with a pair of runs in the fourth inning.
The Raiders cut the lead to 3-2 in the fifth after Laughlin and Price singled and Laughlin scored on an error. But that would be it for the Raiders.
Price led the SOU offense with three hits, while Kathryn Moy and Rayna Okimoto each had two hits. As a team, the Raiders left 11 runners on base in the second game. Junior Karri Johnson gave up just two hits in her five-plus innings of work.
