MEDFORD, Ore. – Sophomore pitcher Neil Emerson (2-0) went the distance for the Owls and the Oregon Tech baseball team defeated Corban College by a final of 5-2 in a non-conference nine inning game played this afternoon in Medford.
Oregon Tech improves to 2-4 on the season with the win. Today was the season opener for the Warriors, as Corban begins the year 0-1.
Corban jumped out early and scored their only two runs of the game in the first inning to lead 2-0.
The Owls answered in the bottom half of the first with two of their own tying the game at 2-2. Back-to-back singles by Kory Locken and Trent Smith led off the inning and a Colin Stock single drove in both runners.
With bases empty and two out in the bottom of the third, the Owls took the lead for good. Stock walked and moved to second on a wild pitch. Ryan Mauricio followed with an RBI single and Cory Spires landed on base on an error. A Cory Staniforth double scored both Mauricio and Spires, as that would be all the runs Tech would need, leading 5-2. After giving up two in the first inning, Emerson shut down the Warriors for the remainder as the Owls won by the same 5-2 final. Emerson gave up four hits and two runs in his second outing of the season and struck out nine Warrior batters.
Zack Earle was 2-for-3, the only Owl player with two hits. Staniforth drove in two runs, while Mauricio and Stock had an RBI each.
The Owls face Corban College Saturday in a doubleheader beginning at 11 am in Medford, Oregon at U.S. Cellular Field.
