BOX SCORE

PORTLAND, Ore.—Concordia senior Alex Tiefenthaler scored 42 points to finish a single point shy of tying the school record in a 108-92 win over Corban in Cascade Collegiate Conference basketball action on Friday night.

With the win, Concordia improved to 15-9 on the season and 5-8 in CCC play while Corban fell to 6-19 overall and 1-13 in league contests.

Tiefenthaler connected on 16 of 22 from the field which included a perfect 4 of 4 from beyond the three-point arc and 6 of 8 from the free throw line to fall just shy of the Cavalier all-time best of 43 points set by Randy Eason in a double-overtime loss to Western Baptist (now Corban College) on Nov. 18, 1995.

Eason, a senior from Llano, Calif., converted 18 of 31 from the field that night including 3 of 9 from long range and 4 of 7 from the free throw line.

Tiefenthaler’s mark, however does stand as the most points scored by a Cavalier in a non-overtime contest. The 6 foot 9 senior got off to a near perfect start in the first half, combining for 25 points after hitting 9 of 12 attempts and 3 of 3 from three-point territory.

Corban claimed the lead through most of the first half, going up by as many as five points following a pair of Jake Kopra free throws with 4:20 remaining, but a 13-2 Cavalier run which featured threes by Tiefenthaler, Drew Preuninger and Sergio Rosario boosted CU to a 54-50 lead at the half.

The Cavs extended their advantage out of the break, creating a double-digit advantage following a Gage Aker layup at the 17:31 mark. Corban immediately responded with six unanswered points between Erik Cronrath and Ben Potloff to cut the deficit to 65-61 with 16 minutes remaining.

Firing at a 61.8 percent clip in the second half with Tiefenthaler adding 17 points and Jourdan Sweeney tallying 19 of his 24 points in the final 20 minutes of play, Concordia proved too much for the Warriors as the y finished out the clock with the 16-point win.

“We played a very good game against a team with an extremely deceiving record,” CU head coach Brad Barbarick said. “They have some talented players and always play hard up and down the court, but Tiefenthaler was a difference maker for us tonight. He is a phenomenal shooter for a big man but he displayed great patience tonight in his attack. He let the game come to him and was on fire from all over the court.”

The Cavs finished with a sterling 57.1 percent rate from the floor compared to an even 50 percent or the visiting Warriors. Concordia also enjoyed a 37-32 edge in rebounds with more than half (19) of their boards coming at the offensive end.

Four players from each team reached double figures in the scoring column as Preuninger added 17 and Rosario 10 for the Cavs. Cronrath and Potloff each had 25 points for Corban with Cronrath hitting on a 6 of 13 shooting night that was aided by a 13 of 14 performance from the free throw line. Ian Logan finished with 17 and Nash Keene added 15.

Tiefenthaler also posted a game-high 12 rebounds for the Cavs.

Concordia returns to action on Saturday night by hosting Northwest Christian while Corban extends it stay in Portland by traveling to face Warner Pacific.
