Schumacher Rescues Knights Versus NCU
PORTLAND, Ore. – Kristina Schumacher scored the winning lay up with 8 seconds remaining to give Warner Pacific a 63-62 win over an upset minded Northwest Christian team tonight at C.C. Perry Gym.
Down a single point and 90 feet away from their own basket, Schumacher tracked down an errant inbounds pass for WP and steamed the length of the floor. The Beacons quickly inbounded and rushed forward, but Aly Bruns’ 30 foot attempt was off the mark, allowing Warner Pacific to escape with the one point victory.
An upset seemed to be in the making as NCU hit three point field goals on three straight possessions to take a 52-48 lead with 55 seconds to play.
Shayla Fetters countered with a clutch trey of her own during the next possession to close the Knights within one. The Beacons had a chance to extend their lead, but missed 2 free throws with .16 to play, setting up Schumacher’s winning shot.
Fetters led the Knights in scoring for the first time this season with 12 points. Marissa Towry also had 12, while Kelsey Mattsen added 11 points and 5 rebounds.
Lori Renner paced the Beacons with 12 points, and Katie Montieth added 10 points and 5 rebounds.
Warner Pacific improves to 14-8 overall and is now tied for 2nd in the CCC at 9-4. NCU drops to 8-16 and 2-12.
