Cavs Add Four Qualifiers in Idaho
COMPLETE RESULTS
MOSCOW, Idaho –Already armed with an NAIA provisional qualifying mark, Concordia sophomore Eric Whalen, a returning indoor All-American in the shot put, notched an automatic mark in the event with a 51-0 1/4 heave at the Runners Soul Open held at the University of Idaho on Saturday.
Whalen, who finished fifth at the NAIA Indoor Championships last season, upped his season best by nearly two feet in the third-place effort. Whalen’s mark was only bested by Idaho’s Eugenio Mannucci with a 56-8 and Montana’s Caleb McSurdy, who finished in second place with a 51-11 3/4. Whalen holds the indoor school record in the shot with a 53-0 3/4 toss.
A trio of Cavaliers earned provisional status in their respective events as Eunice Makinde, Brent Titus and Jordan Trump each reached the NAIA ‘B’ standard.
Makinde dashed to a 9.39 in the 60-meter hurdles to clip the provisional barrier by .01, Titus hit a season-best in the weight throw by unleashing a 51-9 1/4 and trump cleared 15-1 in the pole vault to hit the standard dead on.
In addition, a single school record fell on Saturday as Catherine Sims nipped the indoor best in the event by .03 with a 26.41 in the women’s 200, breaking current teammate Stephanie Persaud’s all-time best in the race.
“It was a great meet for us and we have two more weeks to get marks. After that we are on to nationals where we are excited about the group we are putting together,” CU head coach Randy Dalzell said.
