Oregon Tech's Cory Staniforth
Staniforth Leads Tech with Four Homers in Sweep of Patten
DEL MAR, CA. - Oregon Tech wins back-to-back victories on the road in commanding fashion, taking down Patten University 12-5 in game 1 and 14-4 in game 2.
In game 1, it would be the Oregon Tech taking charge early, scoring 7 runs off of 6 hits. Center Fielder Kory Locken would single to left field to get things started, keen eyes by OIT would force two walks to follow and allow SS Zack Earle to drive two runners home with a base hit to left. A homerun by 3rd basemen Cory Staniforth cleared the bases allowing for 3 more runs for Oregon Tech.
Up 7-to-3 going into the second, Earle would connect with a solo homerun but OIT wouldn't score again till the 4th inning. Zack Earle would come up big again, notching his second homer of the day and driving in the DH Ryson Mauricio putting the Owls up 10-to-3.
OIT would find two more runs in the 7th, with Stanifoth's 2nd homerun, followed by an RBI single by Kory Locken. OIT's pitcher Matt Bellando secured the win, going for 7 straight innings, allowing only 6 runs on 5 hits and 3 strikeouts.
Kory Locken and Zack Earle ended the day with three hits each, Staniforth and RF Kevin Armendariz would claim 2 hits. Earle had 5 RBI's, Staniforth had 4 RBI's, and Locken 2 RBI's in the Tech win. Oregon Tech would finish game 1 with 12 hits and 11 RBI's, securing the win as they prepare for the rematch in game 2.
Inspired by their win in game 1, game 2 for OIT was even better, defeating Patten yet again with the score of 14-to-4.
Unlike the first game however, play would remain close. Kory Locken for OIT would start off with a solo homer and put OIT up early 1-0. Patten University would tie the game in the second however, with a homer of their own.
Tied up at 1-1, DH Patacsil would find the sweet spot, knocking one out of the park and giving Patten University their first lead. Still, OIT would answer, tying the game up again with another homer from Staniforth early in the 6th.
OIT came out swinging in the 7th posting 11 runs on 9 hits. Sparked by 3 straight hits, Ryson Mauricio would go deep with a Grand Slam homer to left field. Cory Staniforth would follow with his fourth homer of the day. IF Trent Smith brought home 3 more runs with an double and 2 RBI singles by 2nd basemen Colin Stock and Staniforth.
Oregon Tech would start the 7th inning stretch, up 13-to-2. Patten University would find 2 more runs by game's end but to- little-to-late as 2nd basemen Nick Staller would seal the deal with a solo homer in the 9th as Tech won 14-4.
Locken, Stock, and Staniforth each tallied 4 hits and a combined 7 RBI's. Mauricio and Spires would come away with 3 hits with Mauricio notching 4 RBI's in contribution.
The two teams will play a double-header Monday to make up for Saturday’s double-header that was postponed.
Oregon Tech is now 2-0 in conference play and 8-11 on the season. Patten falls to 0-2 in conference play and 2-13 on the season.
