OIT's Parnell Tabbed CCC Player of the Year
PORTLAND, Ore. – Oregon Tech senior Justin Parnell, who ranked among the top 10 in no less than six CCC statistical categories, has been voted the 2009-10 Cascade Collegiate Conference Player of the Year in men’s basketball, the conference office announced Monday.
OIT coach Dan Miles, who guided the No. 2-ranked Hustlin’ Owls to the CCC regular season title and a berth in the NAIA Championships, was voted the Coach of the Year. It is the fifth CCC coaching honor for Miles, who also earned the award following the 1996-97, 2000-01, 2004-05 and 2006-07 campaigns.
Warner Pacific center Kaylone Riley, who ranked among the national leaders in rebounds and blocked shots all season, was selected the Defensive Player of the Year for the second straight season. Ben Voogd, a double transfer from LSU and Oregon, was named the Newcomer of the Year.
Northwest University and Northwest Christian University were selected as co-recipients of the Champions of Character Award for best exemplifying the core values of integrity, respect and sportsmanship.
Parnell, a two-time CCC Player of the Week, ranked second in the CCC in scoring (18.8 ppg) and led the conference in assists (4.72 apg) and assist/turnover ratio (2.66). The 6-4 guard/forward also averaged a team-high 5.9 rebounds per game in conference play.
“Justin is a great leader and competitor, with special offensive skills,” says OIT coach Dan Miles. “He is the best on-ball defender I have ever coached.”
Riley, a 6-8 senior from Las Vegas, led the NAIA in blocked shots (4.2 bpg) and ranked fifth nationally in rebounds per game (10.7) through the end of the regular season. Voogd, a 6-2 senior who transferred from the University of Oregon, earned CCC Newcomer of the Year honors after ranking sixth in the CCC in scoring (17.9 ppg) and third in assists (4.4 apg).
Joining Parnell on the All-CCC team from OIT was teammate Joseph Foster, a 5-11 junior guard who averaged 17.9 points per game and led the league in free throw percentage (.913). Foster also ranked tied for third in 3-point field goals made (41).
Eastern Oregon, which finished runner-up to Oregon Tech in the regular season standings, had a pair of selections in senior forward Jordan Gregg and senior wing Dan Stafford. The 6-7 Gregg averaged 16.1 points and 9.6 rebounds per game for the Mountaineers, who were ranked 13th in the NAIA’s final Top 25 poll of the season. The 6-4 Stafford averaged 13.7 points and 5.1 rebounds in addition to shooting 47 percent from beyond the 3-point arc.
Warner Pacific, which finished tied for third in the CCC regular season standings and was ranked 20th in the final NAIA Top 25 poll, had a league-high three players named to the All-CCC squad. In addition to Riley, the Knights were represented by 6-7 senior forward Jake Glisson and 6-0 senior guard Reggie Guyton. Glisson averaged 18.4 points and 5.4 rebounds per game; Guyton averaged 15.7 points per game and led the CCC in 3-point field goals made (51).
Evergreen’s Nate Menefee, the CCC Player of the Year in 2008-09, was named to the first team after leading the CCC and ranking fifth nationally in scoring (25.6 ppg). The 5-10 Menefee also led the CCC in steals and minutes played.
Rounding out the All-CCC team were Craig McGee, a 6-8 senior forward from College of Idaho who averaged 18.3 points per game; Alex Tiefenthaler, a 6-9 senior center from Concordia who averaged 18.2 points and 6.1 rebounds per game; and Greg George, a 6-9 junior post from Northwest who averaged 14.1 points and 7.2 rebounds per contest.
