Corban's Sherwood Inks 2nd Generation Warrior
SALEM, Ore. – Eighth-year head coach Justin Sherwood added a second name to his list of recruits for the 2010-11 season with the signing of Meridian High School senior Josiah Sebens (Bellingham, Wash.) to a Letter of Intent, as announced Monday.
"It was great news to hear Friday that Josiah decided to come play basketball next season here at Corban," said Sherwood. "At 6-5, Josiah will add length out on the perimeter. He has the ability to score from beyond the three-point line and take the ball to the basket. Two things I liked about Josiah was his work ethic and how well he handles the ball."
Sebens, who is the son of former Warrior Tim Sebens (1971-74), is currently preparing to lead Meridian into the 1A state tournament Wednesday against Ilwaco. The Trojans will enter the state tournament ranked 10th in the state according to the latest 1A coaches' poll with a win-loss record of 16-7 overall and 8-5 in Northwest League play. As a senior, Sebens is averaging a team-high 21.0 points per game and is pulling down 8.0 rebounds per contest. The 6-foot-5 guard is second in the conference in scoring and has scored a league-high 482 points this season that includes a career-high 39 in a 62-58 loss to Nooksack Valley in December.
Following the conclusion of his senior season, Sebens will be participating in the 2A-1A All-Star Game that is scheduled for March 20th at Mountlake Terrace High School. Sebens is the only Whatcom County 1A player participating in the game.
As a junior, Sebens averaged a team-high 13.7 points per game and helped lead Meridian to a win-loss record of 16-7 and 9-4 in Northwest League play. Thanks to his performance during the season, Sebens was named 1st team All-Whatcom County and 2nd team All-Northwest Conference.
Sebens will be the second person in his family to suit up for the Warriors following in the footsteps of his father, who ranks 18th on the all-time scoring chart in program history with 1,254 points. The elder Sebens also ranks in the Top 10 all-time in Warrior history in rebounds (731 – 6th) and rebounds per game (9.9 – tied for 3rd), while also pulling down a team-high 11.0 rebounds per game in his first season to rank 5th on the all-time single season list in program history. At the conclusion of his career, the elder Sebens knocked down 86.4% of his shots at the free throw line to rank eighth all-time for a single season in program history.
Corban concluded the 2009-10 season just over a week ago, as Sherwood is expecting almost 93% of his roster to return next season to go along with the addition of local star Jordan Carter from nearby McKay High School, who signed with the Warriors in late January.
