EUGENE, Ore. – Almost exactly one year after tying a pair of NAIA records, sophomore Brooke Davis did herself one better on Saturday, crushing three home runs in a game to tie an NAIA record, while adding a double in her fourth at-bat to equal 14 total bases. Those 14 total bases are the most ever in NAIA history, a record that Davis now holds by herself.
It was on March 11th of the 2009 season that Davis hit three home runs in a game against George Fox, collecting 12 total bases.
Her efforts, combined with three other home runs from Beacon batters on the day, allowed for an NCU sweep on Saturday over British Columbia, 6-2 and 8-5, in games taking place at the Hood River Park in Clackamas, Oregon. The Beacons then returned home on Sunday, where they dropped a double-header to Simpson University, 1-0 and 6-1.
Northwest Christian 6, British Columbia 2
Northwest Christian combined for eight hits, including home runs from Brittany Robles and Megan Mazanec, knocking off the T-Birds in game one of a double header. Robles finished the day 2-for-4 with two runs while Mazanec went 2-for-3 with three RBI and two runs scored. Cassie Bishop went 0-for-1 at the plate but had a school-record three walks in the game. The Beacon career walk leader brought her career total to 41 walks.
Davis picked up the win for NCU, allowing one run over four innings while striking out three batters. Jenna Royce went the final three innings and struck out five batters to record her first career save.
Northwest Christian 8, British Columbia 5
Davis’ trio of home runs was the story as the sophomore finished the game batting 4-for-4 with three runs and six RBI. It was just the second four-hit game in NCU softball history. Bishop also hit a home run in the game for Northwest Christian, her single-season school record tying eighth homer, and the 20th bomb of her career.
Kalyssa Koontz (4-1) picked up the win for NCU, allowing one earned run on five hits over three innings of work. Becca Lillegard started the game and threw three scoreless innings and Royce pitched a perfect seventh inning to record her second save of the day.
Simpson 1, Northwest Christian 0
Davis (5-6) took the loss for NCU, despite throwing a complete-game one hitter. NCU had no runs on six hits, leaving the bases loaded in the sixth inning, and an unearned run in the fourth inning would be all the scoring in the game. Davis struck out eight batters in the one-hitter. Kristen DeHaven went 2-for-3 for the Beacons.
Simpson 6, Northwest Christian 1
Northwest Christian once again had defensive struggles, with five unearned runs scoring as a result of seven NCU errors. Royce (1-2) took the loss for the Beacons, despite not allowing any earned runs through the first three innings, while striking out two. Lillegard finished out the game and allowed one earned run on six hits while striking out four batters. Lillegard and Amy Stanton had two hits apiece for NCU.
