CU's Danielle Ferguson won the triple jump at the Pacific Preview on Saturday.
Five Cavs Double Up at Pacific Preview
COMPLETE RESULTS
FOREST GROVE, Ore.—With five athletes that grabbed gold in a pair of events, Concordia tallied 15 individual wins as well as a first-place performance in a relay to highlight Cavalier action at the Pacific Preview held at Lincoln Park Stadium on Saturday.
On the women's side, Concordia took dominated in the sprints and hurdles with Stephanie Persaud leading a 1-2-3 sweep in the 100 with a 12.72 win. The Cavs nearly duplicated the feat in the 200 with Persaud taking second behind Catherine Sims while teammate Kaley Jameson finished in fourth place with a 26.85, just .05 off of third. Sims also posted a victory in the 400 by crossing in 59.96 to score a second individual win.
The sprinting corps capped its day with a stadium and school record in the 400-meter relay as Persaud, Jameson, Sims and Sabrina Hoffman combined to round the oval in 46.66, defeating the previous school mark of 47.79 by more than a full second.
Eunice Makinde and Hoffman posted the top times in the 100- and 400-meter hurdles with Makinde establishing a school and stadium record in the highs with a 15.02 to score a NAIA provisional qualifier. Hoffman toured the track in 1:06.75 for a two-second win in the intermediates.
Posting a 20-foot win in the discus, Emily Redmayne-Titley secured a spot at nationals by reaching the NAIA ‘A’ standard with a 142-10 toss. Redmayne-Titley also took top honors in the shot put by unleashing a 37-10 3/4 effort.
Three members of the CU men’s team posted wins in multiple events as Chris Wilson swept the hurdles, Marcus Cooper winning the triple jump and the high jump and Erik Kuster scoring wins in the shot and the discus.
In his first season of outdoor competition for the Cavs, Kuster’s marks instantly placed him among the all-time leaders on Concordia’s outdoor performance list. Kuster uncorked a 162-6 in the discus to move into No. 3 on the school’s leaderboard in the event and a 48-11 in the shot for fourth place on the all-time list. His discus effort also earned him an automatic qualifier to the NAIA Outdoor Championships.
In the jumps, Cooper, fresh off of competing at the NAIA Indoor Championships, cleared 6-6 3/4 in the high jump for an event win but fell just shy of reaching the ‘B’ standard. In the triple Jump, Cooper covered 43-5 3/4 for the fifth-best jump in school history for his second win of the day.
CU’s final double-winner came on the track as Wilson was untouchable in the two races. Wilson crossed in 15.64 to defeat his next closest competitor by .51 while cruising to a 57.90 in the 44-meter version for a 2-plus second win.
Other event winners on the day included: Danielle Ferguson in the women’s triple jump with a 35-10 1/2 and Marcus Nelson in the men’s 5,000 with a 15:28.09. Nelson, in his first competition since leading the Cavs at the 2009 NAIA Cross Country Championships in the fall, opened his outdoor career with the school’s fifth best time in the event and cross just two seconds shy of the third best mark by a Cavalier.
Ferguson, who also competed in the high jump, landed just seven inches shy of her personal record of 36-6 3/4 that was set during the 2009 campaign.
“It was a good meet considering we were without many of our athletes that just got done with competing at indoor nationals,” CU head coach Randy Dalzell said. “Our women’s sprinters had a good showing and looks to be shaping up well.”
