CCC Players of Week Named in Baseball, Softball, Golf
The following student-athletes have been named Cascade Collegiate Conference Players of the Week in their respective sports for the period Feb. 22-28:
BASEBALL
Player – Oregon Tech’s Cory Staniforth, a 6-0 junior first baseman from Central Point, Ore., homered four times – twice in each game – as the Owls posted NAIA West victories over Patten College. Staniforth was 6 of 9 at the plate, drove in eight runs and scored four runs. Honorable mention: Jared Arehart, College of Idaho; Steven Blum, Corban.
Pitcher – Ben Rosen of College of Idaho, a 6-4 senior from Eagle River, Alaska, tossed six shutout innings in the Yotes’ 11-2 victory over NCAA Division III foe Whitworth. Rosen walked one and fanned two in picking up the victory. Honorable mention: Craig Baker, Corban.
GOLF
Men – Justin Ahrens of Northwest Christian, a senior from Eugene, Ore., started the spring season with a one-under 71 in the first round and hung on to claim a tie for fourth place at the Pacific Invitational. Ahrens followed his 71 with a two-over 74 for a 145 total in the 36-hole tournament. Honorable mention: Joey Duwe, Corban.
Women – Ashley King of Northwest Christian, a junior from Blue River, Ore., had her second-lowest round (78) of the 2009-10 season and took second place overall at the Pacific Invitational. Honorable mention: Morgan McComish, Corban.
SOFTBALL
Player – Krista Kountz of Eastern Oregon, a 5-5 senior third baseman from Vancouver, Wash., batted .500 and blasted a pair of homers as the Mountaineers went 4-0 with sweeps of George Fox and Lewis & Clark. Kountz drove in 11 runs in the four games. Honorable mention: Jess Plummer, Oregon Tech; Liane Dehart, Corban; Jessica Flores, Southern Oregon; Tina Garcia, Concordia; Cassie Bishop, Northwest Christian.
Pitcher – Renee Santos of Concordia, a 5-7 junior from Portland, Ore., was nearly flawless in three outings at the SOU Invitational. She opened the weekend by coming within two outs of tossing a perfect game against No. 11 Concordia-Irvine. The next day, she struck out 13 in a seven-inning three-hitter against Azusa Pacific for her second straight shutout. She then finished her weekend with 3 2/3 innings of no-hit relief against Biola. She allowed just one run in 15 2/3 innings of work. Honorable mention: Makenzie Marchbanks, Corban; Jessica Flores, Southern Oregon; Mikey Eustance, Oregon Tech; Suzie Espinoza, Eastern Oregon; Brooke Davis, Northwest Christian.
