Yotes Roll to Series Sweep of Bethany
CALDWELL, Idaho - Diego Robles hit two of the Coyotes five home runs on the day and Izaac Garsez tied a school record with two triples in the opener, as The College of Idaho routed Bethany University, 22-2 and 8-2, this afternoon at Wolfe Field.
With the victories, the Coyotes (19-7, 9-3 NAIA West) remained one game back of first-place British Columbia in the loss column, while extending their home win streak to 13 games.
In the opener, the Yotes erupted for 12 runs in the second inning, the equaling the most runs scored in a frame by a Shawn Humberger skippered club. It was the most runs scored by a C of I team since 2000. Garsez got the inning started with a two-run triple, then added an opposite-field three-run homer later in the frame. He became the second Coyote to record two triples in a game - joining Scott Skeen, who accomplished the feat three times from 2000-02.
Levi Mitchum was outstanding in his first start of the season, allowing just two hits in five shutout innings, striking out five. Garsez and Jye Lanphere each had three of the Yotes 19 hits, while Mark LaMothe hit a two-run homer in the sixth for the Bruins (4-16, 4-7), averting the shutout.
Game 2 saw the Yotes use a three-run third inning to take control. Garsez roped an RBI double, followed by a long home run to left by Robles. Robles would add an RBI double in the fourth, capping a three-run frame, that made it 6-0.
Bobby Wassman picked up his fifth win of the season, going six innings, fanning seven - his only mistake, a two-run Ryan Taylor homer in the sixth.
Tyler Andazola, who hit a three-run homer in Game 1, went 3-for-3 in the nightcap, while Robles went 3-for-4, his seventh game of three-or-more hits this season.
The Yotes step away from NAIA West play next week, hosting No. 7 ranked Lewis-Clark State in a three-game series. The teams play a single game at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, following by a noon doubleheader on Thursday.
