CU's Makinde, Whalen Set School Records at Oregon Preview
COMPLETE RESULTS
EUGENE, Ore.—With Eunice Makinde and Eric Whalen leading the way, the Concordia track and field team posted four event wins and 10 NAIA outdoor qualifiers at the Oregon Preview held at Hayward Field on Saturday.
Finishing in fifth place, Makinde sliced .05 off the school’s 110-meter hurdle record with a time of 14.77. The time, an improvement from 15.02 last week at the Pacific Preview, moved Makinde from provisional to automatic status for the NAIA Outdoor Championships as she cleared the ‘A’ standard of 14.90 with room to spare.
Cortney Bannister set the previous school best with a 14.82 set at the 2008 Cascade Collegiate Conference Championships.
Setting the lone school mark on the men’s side, Eric Whalen, fresh of an All-America performance at the NAIA Indoor Championships, unleashed a 52-10 1/2 effort in an event win.
Whalen, who had a previous outdoor best of 50-4 1/4, added more than two full inches to the previous school record of 52-8 3/4 set by Leon Carl during the 2007 season. With the NAIA auto qualifier, Whalen won the shot by more than three feet as Oregon’s Michael VanDoren posted the next best mar with a 49-4 1/2.
Gabrielle Dixson, competing for the first time in a CU jersey after placing eighth at nationals in the indoor weight throw, notched a pair of automatic qualifiers with fourth-place finishes in both the hammer and the discus. Dixson opened her day with a 161-0 in the hammer to threaten the school record of 166-10 set by teammate Sharayah Kenady and returned with a 138-10 in the discus.
Kai Schmidt claimed the fourth ‘A’ standard performance for the women’s team as the freshman launched a 133-0 in the javelin in a winning performance. Provisional qualifiers went to Amanda Federici in the hammer throw with a 152-3 and Catherine Sims in the open 400 with a 57.49, a time just shy of the 57.30 auto barrier.
Along with Whalen, the men’s throwing corps captured two more ‘A’ marks as Bo Johnson was measured in 177-9 in the hammer to take fourth place and Paul Roshau 195-6 in the javelin in a third-place finish.
The final qualifier for the CU men occurred in the pole vault as Jordan Trump matched his own outdoor school record with a successful jump at 15-7 to reach provisional status.
With a personal record heave, Emily Redmayne-Titley became the fourth event winner for the Cavaliers with a 146-3 effort, an improvement from her collegiate best of 144-10 set last season as a freshman.
Concordia continues action at Pac-10 universities next week when it competes at the Stanford Invitational on March 26-27.
