C of I and NAIA Hall of Fame standout R.C. Owens was inducted in the Bay Area Sports Hall of Fame
SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. - College of Idaho alum, R.C. Owens, was inducted Monday evening into the prestigious Bay Area Sports Hall of Fame in a ceremony at the Westin St. Francis Hotel.
Owens, a football and basketball All-American for the Coyotes from 1952-56, was honored for his commitment to the community following a stellar career in the National Football League with the San Francisco 49ers, Baltimore Colts, and the New York Giants.
He is one of five Bay Area sports legends to be in the 2010 Hall of Fame class – being joined by four-time U.S. Champion and 1988 Olympic Gold Medalist figure skater, Brian Boitano, former Oakland Athletic shortstop and three-time World Champion, Bert Campaneris, longtime Oakland Raiders owner, Al Davis, and longtime University of San Francisco soccer coach, Stephen Negoesco.
The Bay Area Sports Hall of Fame was founded in 1979 by former San Francisco 49ers president, Lou Spadia – creating a youth fund to generate grants for youth sports programs. It has been called, “The Hall Without a Hall,” a slogan that has been copied around the nation.
Notable names in the Bay Area Sports Hall of Fame include baseball Hall of Fame players Joe DiMaggio, Rollie Fingers, Reggie Jackson, and Willie Mays, football Hall of Famers John Elway, Dan Fouts, Joe Montana, Jerry Rice, and John Madden, Olympic standouts Mark Spitz, Bruce Jenner, and Peggy Fleming, tennis star John McEnroe, and golfer Tom Watson.
C of I president, Dr. Marvin Henberg and C of I athletic director, Marty Holly, were in attendance at Monday’s ceremony.
