Jennifer McDonnell and the Mountaineers picked up two losses Wednesday.
ROCKLIN, Calif. -- The Eastern Oregon University softball team ended its long road trip with a pair of losses at William Jessup University Wednesday, 4-0 and 8-0.
The Mountaineers (9-7) (1-3) fell for the third straight game against WJU. The Warriors had 13 hits and only one error in 12 innings of play against Eastern.
EOU scored no runs off of its five hits in the first game. Eastern left six runners on base in the Game 1 loss and committed two errors.
Both teams were held scoreless until the fourth inning. Krista Kountz advanced Iris Woodhead to third base with a double to deep left field. Woodhead and the Mountaineers would fail to score when William Jessup’s Brianna Melgard struck out the next two batters.
With the momentum back in WJU’s favor, Mallory Blodgett had one of her two RBI in the bottom half of the fourth inning when she grounded out to second base, but Ashley Mendez scored. The Warriors (17-8) added three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to seal the victory.
Melgard picked up the win on the mound, while Jennifer McDonnell was credited with the loss. McDonnell gave up one earned run, two hits, and walked one batter in five innings. The freshman struck out three batters.
McDonnell would pick up a second loss in Game 2. William Jessup blew open the second game with three home runs, two coming in the bottom of the sixth inning. The Warriors used a big sixth inning to separate from EOU again.
The Mountaineers trailed WJU 2-0 entering the sixth inning, until William Jessup had four hits and Eastern Oregon committed an error in the inning. EOU would leave seven runners on base in the game after getting five hits. The Warriors had nine hits and left five runners on base.
Eastern hosts the eighth-ranked team in the country Saturday in the first home game of the season. The Mountaineers welcome Concordia University (15-1) (4-0) to Peggy Anderson Field at 11 a.m. The Cavaliers are off to the best start in school history and sits atop the Cascade Collegiate Conference standings.
