Ray Santiago went 3-for-4 in Yotes loss to L-C
CALDWELL, Idaho - Josh Ashenbrenner lined an RBI single in the top of the ninth inning that scored the eventual winning run, as Lewis-Clark State defeated The College of Idaho, 5-4, this afternoon at windy Wolfe Field.
With the score tied 3-3, the No. 7 ranked Warriors (21-2) got to Coyote reliever Bobby Wassmann, taking advantage of a single, two walks, and a pair of passed balls, to take the lead. Ashenbrenner followed with the knock to right, scoring Michael Bush, to make it 5-3.
L-C would need both runs, as Jye Lanphere led off the bottom of the frame with a solo home run. One out later, Tyler Andazola lined a base hit to left, chasing reliever Zach Clanton. Tyrell Poggemeyer came out of the pen and got Jordan Lanman to fly out to left, with Jake Eccles crashing into the wall to make the grab. Andazola was past second base, with the Warriors relay doubling the freshman off to end the game.
The Coyotes (19-9) had their chances all afternoon, recording 14 hits – but left men in scoring position in the second, fourth, and eighth, and had another runner gunned down at home plate trying to score from second.
A two-run homer by Kevin Lovelace in the second inning capped a three-run rally off C of I starter, Ben Rosen, but the righty settled down, allowing just five hits in his six innings of work, striking out seven. Levi Mitchum also was solid in relief, throwing two shutout innings.
The Yotes got on the board in the third, as Andazola doubled, with Izaac Garsez singling him home. The C of I would tie it in the eighth, scoring one on a bases loaded double play ball, another on a two-out two-strike RBI single from Jarel Lewis.
Ray Santiago went 3-for-4, with Garsez, Lewis, and Andazola recording two hits for the Yotes. Brian Gaylord and Pat Murray each had two hits for L-C, with starter Colby Hawk allowing one run with six strikeouts in seven innings of work in a no decision.
The Coyotes will have the weekend off in preparation for an eight-game road trip, beginning next Saturday at Oregon Tech.
