Cavs Tackle Yotes in CCC Road Tilt

CALDWELL, Idaho—Renee Santos tossed a one-hitter in the opener while the Concordia offense erupted in the second game to sweep College of Idaho, (4-0, 14-4) in Cascade Collegiate Conference softball action played at Symms Field on Friday afternoon.
Concordia, ranked No. 8 in the NAIA, improved to 17-1 with the wins and moved to 6-0 in CCC play. C of I fell to 4-8 overall with a 2-4 mark in league action. Concordia continues its road swing against Oregon Tech on Saturday while the Yotes are set to host Great Falls in non-conference action.
Santos sent down the first 12 batters of the game before a leadoff single by Jody Zilner, the C of I starter, in the bottom of the fifth. The Yotes would not reach second base in the game as Santos got out of the inning with a fielder’s choice to second followed by a pair of strikeouts.
Santos struck out 14 while allowing one other baserunner apart from the single, a one-out walk in the seventh, to face two over the minimum.
The Concordia offense managed a single unearned run in the first and solo run off a Laura Thorp single to left to score Tina Garcia in the fourth to take a 2-0 lead. Thorp returned to the plate in the sixth where she drove in a pair of runners with a single through the middle to give the Cavs a 4-0 lead.
CU outhit the Yotes 8-1 with Mallory Callahan joining Thorp with a pair of hits. Garcia scored two of the team’s four runs.
In the second contest, the Cavs once again started strong with a pair of runners crossing the plate as Kayla Vickaryous, who reached on a bunt single, would score on an error and would be followed by an RBI single from Cameron Way to plate teammate Callahan.
The Cavs added a run in the third but would be matched by C of I as Sammy Dodge led off the frame with a solo shot to center. CU managed two runs in the fifth and one more in the sixth for a 6-1 lead before sending 13 batters to the plate en route to an 8-run inning in the seventh.
The first five batters in the CU lineup had at least two hits in the game with Callahan going 4-pf-5 at the plate with four runs scored and an RBI. Vickaryous went 3-for-5 with a pair of runs, Ali Paz went 2-for-5 with two runs scored and two driven in and Way went 2-for-3 with two RBI. Becca Gawlista and Thorp also recorded two-hit games as the Cavs posted their first double-digit scoring total of the season.
Kristen Haugen belted a two-run single to center in the sixth and the Yotes added an unearned run in the seventh for the final tally.
Concordia registered 18 hits in the game compared to seven, three of which were singles in the seventh, for C of I.
Danielle Pulfrey picked up the win with five innings of two-hit work. Pulfrey struck out seven while not issuing a single walk in the outing.
