CU's Moran Smashes Steeple Mark at Stanford Invite
COMPLETE RESULTS
STANFORD, Calif.—Fresh off an eighth-place finish in the 3,000 at the NAIA Indoor Championships, Lauren Moran made a huge splash in her outdoor opener with a school record run in the 3,000-meter steeplechase to highlight Concordia track and field action in the first day of competition at the Stanford Invitational on Friday.
Moran, the 2009 CCC champion in the steeplechase, cut more than 20 second off her personal best with a 10:50.86 for eighth place overall in the highly competitive invitational. Moran, who had a previous best of 11:14.59 in the event, instantly qualified for the 2010 NAIA Outdoor Championships by easily surpassing the ‘A’ standard of 11:33.00.
The Cavaliers received a second automatic qualifier as Kai Schmidt unleashed a 147-4 in the javelin to win her section by nearly 13 feet and improve upon her 2010 outdoor best by 14 feet. Schmidt, had previously held a season best of 133-0 which was set at the Oregon Preview last week.
Nabbing provisional marks for the Cavs were Marcus Cooper and Jesse Staub. Cooper cleared 6-8 1/4 to place second in the high jump while Staub, the 2009 NAIA national champion in the javelin, tossed a 184-4 in the event to fall just shy of the ‘A’ standard in an 11th-place finish. Paul Roshau, a three-time NAIA All-American, uncorked a season-best 203-10 to claim eighth place, upping his season best by eight feet.
Eunice Makinde and Erik Kuster improved upon their national qualifying marks with Makinde crossing the line in 14.89 in the 100 hurdles and Kuster uncorking a 168-2 in the discus to win his section in the event.
Missing provisional status by the slimmest of margins, Chris Wilson was timed in 15.26 for the second time this season to fall .01 short of the ‘B’ standard while Stephanie Persaud landed a 12.40 in the 100 to approach her school record of 12.33 and fall just shy of the 12.38 provisional barrier.
