Jarel Lewis went 3-for-4 in Game 2 win for C of I
CALDWELL, Idaho - Late inning heroics were abundant this afternoon, however, in the end, The College of Idaho remained unbeaten at home in NAIA West play, sweeping a doubleheader from Concordia University, 4-2 and 9-8, at sunny Wolfe Field.
In the opener, Coyotes' (28-10, 18-4 NAIA West) starter Ben Rosen took a no-hitter into the sixth and held a 1-0 lead, thanks to an Izaac Garsez RBI single, into the eighth inning. However, a two-out, two-run Andrew Reid RBI single gave the Cavaliers (8-26, 4-14) a 2-1 lead. The Yotes were not done, loading the bases on a single, a walk, and a two-out error, setting the table for Jared Arehart, who ripped a bases-clearing double to give the hosts the win.
Rosen allowed just four hits and fanned seven to pick up his seventh win of the season, with Garsez, Kyle Douglas, and Gavin Gamboa each recording two hits. Tyson Kisselburg allowed just one earned run and struck out six in the loss for Concordia.
Game 2 saw the Yotes jump out quickly, as Jordan Lanman doubled, Garsez tripled, and Kyle Douglas lifted a sacrifice fly - giving The C of I a 2-0 lead. A two-run Jarel Lewis homer in the fourth pushed the lead to 5-2, before the Cavs' Calvin Nagy roped a two-run double of the right-field wall in the sixth, cutting the lead to 5-4.
The Coyotes manufactured three runs in the sixth and would need all of them as Sean Myrom hit a three-run homer and Brady Miletich added a pinch-hit RBI double to tie the score. However, The C of I worked its magic once again, as Arehart reached on an error and Lewis singled. Brett Ward then layed down a sacrifice bunt, but CU reliever Brett Ferguson's throw to third base was wild, allowing pinch runner Hank Kvamme to score the winning run.
Lewis had three hits, with Lanman and Ward each logging two in the win, while Reid had three of the Cavaliers 12 hits.
The two teams close out the series with an 11 a.m. doubleheader tomorrow.
