PORTLAND, Ore.—Competing across town at the Lewis & Clark Invitational, the Concordia track teams combined to set three school records and more than 30 personal records at the Eldon Fix Track on Saturday.

All three school records occurred in running events as Catherine Sims established a new school best in the 400-meter dash, Eunice Makinde in the 100 hurdles and ERIC Burck in the 1,500-meter run. Winning the event with a 56.46, Sims knocked .20 off the previous school best in the event which was set by Brittany Grizzard in 2006. Sims also won the 200 with a 25.41, just off her school record of 25.20 set earlier in the season.

Makinde lowered her own school mark in the high hurdles with a 14.60 en route to the event win. Makinde’s previous best was a 14.77 set at the Oregon Preview in late March. Her new mark also moved Makinde up to No. 6 on the NAIA Outdoor performance list.

Racing in a 1,500 for the second straight week, NAIA Indoor 5,000 meter champion Eric Burck snipped more than a full second off the school record with a 3:52.28 for second place overall for the eighth best time in the NAIA. Current teammate Martin Romero-Clark held the previous CU best in the 1,500 with a 3:54.41.

In addition to the three school records, the Cavaliers registered seven new NAIA qualifying marks, including six of the automatic variety.

In the women’s 1,500, Alice Taylor finished with a 4:36.23 in a second-place finish while Lauren Moran crossed in 4:43.10 to beat the 4:43.85 ‘A’ standard.

Derek Furgason and Tim Wyland posted career bests in their respective events as Furgason claimed second place with a 158-3 in the discus for almost a seven-foot personal record and Wyland finishing in third place with a 192-8 toss in the javelin to improve upon his career best by more than five feet.

Amanda Federici added the final women’s qualifier with a 16-0 in the hammer to turn her provisional status into an automatic mark. Charles Cummings, already qualified in the steeplechase, added a provisional qualifier in the 5,000 with a career-best time of 15:06.9.

Along with Burck and Makinde, several CU athletes improved upon their NAIA qualifying performances. Paul Roshau added almost 25 feet to his previous season best by unleashing a meet-winning 220-4 in the javelin. The three-time NAIA All-American nearly matched his career best of 224-7 set in 2008.

Jesse Staub, the 2009 NAIA national champion in the javelin threw a season-best of 195-11 in second place while Erik Kuster, competing in the discus, was measured in 169-10 as both throwers increased their season best distances by about a foot.

In the women’s discus, Breezy Wentz increased her provisional mark of 136-1 to 137-11 for fourth-place.

“Our goal for the weekend was to try and get some marks in events that people haven’t competed in yet,” Concordia head coach Randy Dalzell said. “We were also able to gain a few national qualifiers which helps take the pressure off so we can train and focus on conference instead of having to chase marks.”

Other career-best marks as a Cavalier included: Danielle Fergason (long jump); Derek Furgason (shot, hammer); Jameson Futter (100); Siara Leininger (200); Samantha Robert (1,500); Catherine Sims (long jump); Alice Taylor (800); Breezy Wentz (shot).

Competing in an event for the first time as a Cavalier were: Sophia DeGraff (5,000); Amanda Federici (discus); Danielle Fergason (pole vault); Zach Ginn (1,500); Erik Kuster (hammer); Bo Johnson (shot); Junia Limage (400); Marcus Nelson (800); Maggie Pesanti (steeple); Samantha Robert (800); Taylor Schmidt (110 hurdles).
