Nikki Shumway extended her hit streak to 11 in win over EOU
CALDWELL, Idaho - Nikki Shumway went 3-for-4 with a homer and three RBI, helping The College of Idaho end a five-game Cascade Conference losing streak with an 11-7 victory over Eastern Oregon at Symms Field.
Game 2 of the doubleheader saw the Lady Yotes (12-17, 8-9 CCC) hold a 5-2 lead heading into the fourth inning, however, following a 64-minute lightning delay, the umpire crew suspended the game until a later date to be determined (if necessary).
Things did not start well for The C of I, as the Mountaineers (11-20, 3-14) jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the opening frame, including an RBI single from Ashli Hughes and a two-run Krista Kountz home run. However, the Yotes battled back, taking advantage of two walks, four infield singles, and a pair of EOU throwing errors to plate five runs to regain the lead.
A Shumway two-run homer in the fourth pushed the lead to 7-4, with three more runs scoring in the frame via passed balls.
Jody Zillner struck out 11 batters en route to her ninth win of the season, while Dani Villyard and Hannah Johnson each had two hits for the Coyotes. Kassi Reisbeck had three hits, including a triple, in the loss for EOU.
Game 2 saw the Mounties grab a quick 2-0 lead on a Hughes home run in the first, but the Yotes countered with a Villyard long ball in the bottom of the frame to tie the score. An inning later, Shumway slugged a two-run double to push the margin to 4-2. Leading 5-2, the game was stopped three pitches into the fourth inning when lightning was three miles from the field - with the storm lasting over an hour, the umpire crew deemed the field unsafe and sent the teams home.
The Lady Yotes return to action this weekend, traveling to Northwest Christian on Friday and Corban on Saturday.
