LA GRANDE, Ore. -- The Eastern Oregon University Athletic Department released the Winter Term 2010 Academic Report for its athletic teams Tuesday. Each term academic progress of Mountaineer student athletes is tracked by the Compliance Coordinator in tandem with the Registrars office.

The cumulative GPA for women’s athletic teams for winter term was 3.21 compared to 3.27 for female non- athletes. The cumulative GPA for men’s athletic teams was 3.02 compared to 3.08 for male non-athletes. 11.6 percent of male athletes and 25.5 percent of female athletes achieved Dean’s list status. An individual must have a minimum of 12 graded credits and earn a GPA of 3.50 or above to be named to the Dean’s list. In total 80 student athletes made the mark. Only 7.4 percent of female student athletes were listed in academic peril compared to 15.5 percent of non female student athletes. Male student athletes in peril represented 21.7 percent compared to 24 percent of non male student athletes. Academic peril is considered academic warning, probation or suspension.

“Through the Department of Athletics Strategic Planning we have set some measurable targets related to academic achievement,” Director of Athletics, Rob Cashell said. “We continue to make this a primary focus of our overall program which emphasizes Respect, Responsibility, and Accountability in and out of the classroom.”

In addition, 19 student athletes were recognized as Cascade Conference winter sport (track and field, softball) scholars. To earn recognition as a CCC scholar-athlete, a student must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.2 and sophomore standing.
