LA GRANDE, Ore. – Eastern Oregon University athletics was well represented at La Grande’s first annual Free Family Fun Fair Monday.
“Blue Monday” at Max Square in downtown La Grande asked people to wear blue in honor of Child Abuse Prevention Month. Activities included a Bounce House, a Doll Clinic by the Grande Ronde Hospital, Fire Truck Rides, concessions, and entertainment as well as additional games and activities for kids.
The Eastern Oregon soccer team held a clinic for children of all ages which included games, drills and
instruction from EOU coaches and players. Children participated in fun drills pertaining to shooting, dribbling and much more, as well as interaction with the players and coaches.
“We had a wonderful experience with the young kids in the community,” Eastern soccer head coach Keith Scarlett said. “We just took out a ball, laid down some boundaries, two goals and played soccer on the street for 30 minutes. Isn't that what it's all about?”
The Mountaineer women’s basketball team was in attendance as well. The EOU players brought out a hoop and played some different shooting games, two-on-two, ran relays and were taught some drills.
“It was a lot of fun,” Eastern Oregon freshman basketball player, Kelsea Hurliman said. “I love playing with kids, and I think we just had a great time as a team out there.”
The EOU women’s basketball has reached out to the community in many ways throughout the year. Whether it’s playing games with the elderly at Christmas or hosting kids’ night out, the Mountaineers are always happy to be at an event like this.
“I thought it was a very well organized event,” Eastern women’s basketball head coach Anji Weissenfluh said. “It’s always nice to give back to La Grande, especially to the kids.”
