Cavs Win 13 Events at Linfield’s Boyman Invite
McMINNVILLE, Ore.—Concordia’s Danielle Ferguson landed directly on a NAIA provisional distance in the triple while Jesse Staub went from provisional to automatic status in the javelin to highlight track and field action at a wet and windy Jenn Boyman Invitational held at Linfield University on Saturday.
Despite competing without its distance team, the Cavaliers registered 14 event wins on the day, including nine on the women’s side.
Ferguson nearly matched a career best in the triple jump by landing at 36-9 to reach the NAIA ‘B’ standard dead on. Ferguson, whose career outdoor best in the event is a 36-10 1/4 effort from last May, also placed third in the high jump.
In the men’s field events, Jesse Staub improved his season best in the javelin by more than 10 feet with an NAIA outdoor championship automatic qualifying distance of 195-1. Staub led a clean sweep in the men’s throwing events as Bo Johnson won the hammer, Eric Whalen in the shot and Erik Kuster in the discus.
Johnson tossed a 173-5 in the hammer, just shy of his season best of 177-9 set at Oregon. Whalen captured the shot with a 49-5 and Kuster took the discus with a 157-11. Derek Furgason added a pair of runner-up results with a 46-5 1/2 toss in the shot and a 149-8 in the discus.
The Cavaliers won three of the four throwing events on the women’s side with Gabrielle Dixson taking the shot (39-1 1/4) and the discus (140-7) while teammate Amanda Federici claiming the hammer after unleashing a career-best 156-8.

Concordia’s final two event winners came in the pole vault as Jordan Trump soared 15-9 to tie his own school record and Kaycee Gillespie successfully cleared 9-11 3/4 to win the women’s vault.
In addition, Breezy Wentz and Patrick Fennimore posted career bests in their respective events despite the weather conditions. Wentz added more than 16 feet to her previous best performance in the hammer with a 138-4 while Fennimore cleared 12-6 in the vault to surpass his previous best height of 12-5 1/2.
