Corban's Mayben Announces Resignation as Head Coach After 4 Seasons
SALEM, Ore. – After nearly a decade with Corban's baseball program as either a player or coach, fourth-year head coach Nate Mayben is resigning from his position due to personal reasons effective at the end of the season, as announced Tuesday by Dave Johnson, Director of Athletics.
"Coach Mayben has been a stellar student, Warrior athlete, and coach at Corban," said Johnson. "His excitement for the game of baseball and heart for the university will be hard to replace. We hope the Lord leads Nate back to us in the future."
In nearly four full seasons as the leader of the Warriors, Mayben has accumulated the second highest number of wins in program history behind former head coach Paul Gale (1999-2002).
"I have enjoyed my time at Corban both as a player and coach," commented Mayben. "The people and players that I have worked with have been great, as that is what I will miss the most. After a lot of prayer and conversations with my wife, I have decided to take my coaching career in another direction due to personal reasons."
After four seasons as a Warrior, Mayben moved from the diamond to the coaching box as an assistant under former head coach Larry Casian (2005 & 2006) for two seasons before taking the helm in 2007. During his time as an assistant coach, Mayben helped lead the Warriors to back-to-back fifth place finishes in the Cascade Collegiate Conference.
As a player, Mayben helped lead then-Western Baptist to back-to-back NAIA Region I Tournament appearances in 2002 & 2003. The four-year Warrior concluded his illustrious career ranked in the Top 10 in eleven offensive categories including hits (1st – 214), at-bats (2nd – 656), runs scored (2nd – 120), triples (tied for 3rd – 4), runs batted in (4th – 90), total bases (tied for 4th – 250), hit by pitch (tied for 4th – 22), batting average (5th – .326), on-base percentage (6th – .396), stolen bases (tied for 8th – 22), and doubles (10th – 25).
On the mound, Mayben finished his four-year career ranked in the Top 10 in program history in five categories including saves (2nd – 11), Earned Run Average (7th – 5.27), wins (tied for 8th – 8), appearances (tied for 8th – 51), and strikeouts (9th – 114).
Mayben has coached 12 all-conference selections over the past four seasons that included Jason Braun (29th round by Cincinnati Reds – 869th overall pick) and Jamie McGraw (40th round by Texas Rangers – 1,203 overall pick), who were both chosen in Major League Baseball's First-Year Player Draft after the completion of their respective careers.
A search will begin immediately to fill the head coaching vacancy, as interested parties are encouraged to contact Dave Johnson, Director of Athletics, via telephone at (503) 589-8119 or e-mail at DJohnson@corban.edu.
