Lady Yotes Earn Key Sweep of Southern Oregon
CALDWELL, Idaho - The College of Idaho ran their win streak to four games with a key doubleheader sweep of Southern Oregon, taking the Cascade Conference softball twinbill, 7-2 and 7-3, at Symms Field.
In the opener, Jody Zillner struck out 11 batters, while smacking a two-run home run, as the Lady Yotes (9-9, 6-4 CCC) got to the .500 mark for the first time since the opening weekend of the season.
The C of I loaded the bases in the first inning – getting runs on fielders’ choice and a Kalie Kurdy sacrifice fly, then adding two more runs in the second on RBI singles from Amy Rhoades and Zillner. The Raiders (9-17, 5-7) would cut the lead in half in the sixth on a Justine Fulton RBI double and a ground out, but Zillner’s longball and a Kurdy RBI single capped the scoring.
Brittany Wenzel went 3-for-4 with three runs scored in the win, while Fulton, Bailey Price, and Jessica Flores each had two hits for SOU.
Game 2 saw the Raiders jump out to a quick 3-0 lead in the first – getting an RBI single by Meghan Laughlin, along with runs scored on a ground out and a wild pitch. The C of I would quickly rally, as Rhoades and Dani Villyard had back-to-back doubles in the first to make it 3-1, then add three runs in the second, getting a bloop RBI single from Hannah Johnson and a two-run infield single by Villyard, to give the Coyotes the lead.
The Yotes defense would also help them out – turning double plays to end both the fourth and fifth innings, before The C of I put it away with a three-run fifth – keyed by a Caylin LePire RBI single and a Nikki Shumway two-run homer.
LePire tossed two scoreless innings of relief to pick up her first collegiate win in the circle, with Shumway going 3-for-3 at the plate. Katie Moy and Rayna Okimoto each had two hits for SOU.
The Lady Yotes return to action tomorrow morning, hosting Oregon Tech at 11 a.m. It will be the annual Senior Day – honoring the four senior student-athletes: Rhoades, Villyard, Zillner, and Jenna Volgamore.
