GRESHAM, Ore. – Sunny weather and ideal conditions greeted athletes for the first day of competition at the 2010 Cascade Collegiate Conference Track & Field Championships at Earl Klapstein Stadium on the campus of Mt. Hood Community College.

Concordia’s Taylor Schmidt and College of Idaho’s Emily McCutchan lead the multi-event slate of events after the first day of competition.

Behind top marks in three of the five individual events, Schmidt leads the decathlon field of six competitors. The freshman from Battle Ground, Wash. posted wins in the 100m (11.74 sec.), 400m (52.46 sec.), and the long jump (6.10 meters) to score 3224 points. Asa Miller of Eastern Oregon is close behind in 2nd place with 3143 points after a win in the high jump (6-04.75). Miller is followed by Jason Waltman of Northwest University (3064), Caleb Kowalko of Warner Pacific (2993), Cody Moore of Warner Pacific (2705), and James Billistine of Southern Oregon (2311).

In the women’s heptathlon, McCutchan won the 200m with a time of 25.90 and tallied solid finishes in the other three events to score 2745 points. Concordia’s Dominique Jocoy sits in 2nd place (2584) after winning the 100m (15.88 sec.). She is followed by Rosie Converse of Southern Oregon (2543), Danielle Ricco of Warner Pacific (1873), and Caitlin Morgan of Warner Pacific (1862).

Both the decathlon and heptathlon competitions will continue tomorrow.

The Concordia women’s team is off to a great start, as the Cavaliers finished 1-2-3 in the discus. Emily Redmayne-Titley bested the field with a toss of 151-0, followed by her teammates Gabriella Dixson (148-10), and Breezy Wentz (141-11).

Concordia also dominated the men’s discus, placing four athletes in the top five. The Cavs’ Erik Kuster earned the individual championship with a mark of 167-05. Eastern Oregon’s Chris Dilley placed 2nd at 156-00, followed by three more CU competitors: Derek Furguson at 152-07, Jesse Staub at 151-08, and Bo Johnson at 150-10.

College of Idaho’s Kristine Smith used a strong kick in the final 100 meters to win the 10,000 meter run in a time of 38:08.45. Bethany Howard from Northwest Christian was right behind with a time of 38:13.61.

In the final event of the day, Zach Elliott got Southern Oregon on the board with an impressive win in the 10,000 meters. His time of 31:33.95 was a few ticks better than College of Idaho’s Paul Sartin at 31:35.77.

Action at the CCC Track & Field Championships will continue tomorrow from Earl Klapstein Stadium starting at 4:00pm.
