GRESHAM, Ore. - Three more meet records fell as the 2010 Cascade Collegiate Conference Track & Field Championships concluded today at Earl Klapstein Stadium on the campus of Mt. Hood Community College.
The Concordia University men earned the team championship for the fifth year in a row thanks to six individual champion performances and quality finishes in many other events.
The Concordia women claimed the team championship for the fourth consecutive year behind 11 individual champions. After three more records were broken today, a total of eight meet records fell during the weekend - all set by Concordia women athletes.
The day started with Sarah Schelb from Oregon Tech winning the women’s javelin with a toss of 147-04. The Owl women also received an individual championship from Tracey Filley in the women’s high jump at 5-1.
CU dominated the men’s shot put event by sweeping the top three spots. Eric Whalen was the top performer with a heave of 52-07.25.
Webster Moreland from Warner Pacific registered two individual championship performances with wins in the men’s triple jump (46-08.00) and the high jump (6-7).
Concordia's Catherine Sims continued her outstanding weekend with a new meet record in the 200 meter dash. Her time of 24.50 broke the record set in 2001 by Tiwana Merritt from Southern Oregon. Concordia took the top four places in this event, as Stephanie Persaud (25.49), Eunice Makinde (25.62), and Kaley Jameson 25.84) finished 3-4-5.
Southern Oregon tallied a win thanks to Dennis Olstedt in the 400 meter hurdles, crossing the line in 53.79. champ David Anderson (Corban), the 400 meter champ, placed second in 55.46.
Emily McCutchan, the CCC Female Field Athlete of the Meet from College of Idaho, followed up her heptathlon championship with a first-place finish in the women’s 400 meter hurdles. Her time of 1:03.72 was just ahead of Jocelyn Smith of Corban (1:04.85) and Kimmy Moore of EOU (1:04.85).
The exciting race of the day was the men’s 4 x 100 relay race, won by Southern Oregon in 42.36. In the women’s 4 x 100 relay race, Concordia’s foursome sprinted to a meet record time of 47.20, eclipsing the mark set in 2006 by SOU.
Concordia wasn’t finished in the relay events, as the CU 4 x 400 women’s team beat the old meet record by nearly five seconds by racing to a time of 3:50.67. The old record was set by the 2007 version of the relay from Concordia.
Christy Mosier of Corban denied Concordia a sweep in the women’s shot put by posting a winning heave of 41-08.50. CU's Breezy Wentz (41-03.75) and Gabriella Dixson 41-00.25) finished 2-3.
Catherine Sims of Concordia was named women’s Track Athlete of the Meet. She dominated the weekend with new individual meet records set in the 200 meters and 400 meters. In addition, she was a member of record setting relay teams in the 4 x 100 and 4 x 400 meters.
Webster Moreland of Warner Pacific was voted men’s Field Athlete of the Meet after winning the high jump and triple jump events and placing second in the long jump.
Concordia’s Eric Burck was voted men’s Track Athlete of the Meet thanks to his first place finish in the 5000 meters, second place finish in the 1500 meters, and fast leg on the 4 x 400 relay team.
Coach of the Year for both the men’s and women’s teams went to Concordia’s Randy Dalzell for tjhe fourth consecutive year.
