PORTLAND, Ore. – Concordia newcomers Ali Paz and Renee Santos, who played key roles in the Cavaliers winning the Cascade Collegiate Conference regular season softball title and earning a current national ranking of No. 4, have been named the CCC’s Player and Pitcher of the Year, respectively, according to a vote of the league’s head coaches.

Paz, a transfer from College of the Siskiyous, also was named the CCC’s Newcomer of the Year.

Concordia coach Carrie Kosderka-Farrell, who has guided the Cavs to a record of 32-4 entering this weekend’s CCC Championships, was named the league’s Coach of the Year. This is the first regular season title in her eight-year tenure at Concordia.

Paz led the league with a .422 average in 36 games. She had five doubles, five homers and 34 runs batted in. Paz also had a .485 on-base percentage and was among the league leaders in runs scored (36). She reached base in 33 of the team’s 36 games, had 13 multi-hit games, and finished the regular season with eight straight games with at least one RBI and one hit.

Santos, a transfer from Clackamas CC, posted a 14-1 record with a 1.25 earned run average. She led the league in shutouts (8) and strikeouts (190) while holding opponents to a collective .145 batting average. Santos pitched one no-hitter and had for one-hit complete-game victories. Nationally, she ranked among the top 40 in 10 pitching categories, including strikeouts per nine innings (2nd, 15.98), hits allowed per nine innings (7th, 4.45) and opponents’ batting average (8th, .145).

As a team, Concordia’s No. 4 ranking this season is the highest in Cavalier history. CU also ranked among the nation’s Top 20 in opponents’ batting average, fielding percentage, earned run average, and batting average.
