GRESHAM, Ore.—With a week to go before attempting to defend their conference crowns, the Concordia University track and field teams set five school records at the Mt. Hood Twilight held at Earl Klapstein Track on Friday.
Notching the biggest highlight of the day, CU sophomore Eric Whalen smashed his own school mark in the shot put with a 55-0 heave, improving upon his previous best of 53-3 1/2 and moving to a tie for fourth on the NAIA performance list. Whalen, an NAIA Indoor All-American in the event during the indoor season, won his discipline by 3 ¼ inches over Mt. Hood’s Junior Velasquez.

On the women’s side, Catherine Sims dipped below her own school record in the 400 with a 56.35 to slash .11 off her previous best and into sixth on the NAIA performance list. Sims was also a member of the record-setting 400 relay squad, joining Eunice Makinde, Stephanie Persaud and Kaley Jameson, to tour the track in 47.16 to cut more than a half of a second of the previous CU all-time mark.
