CU Freshman Taylor Schmidt Fifth in Decathlon at U.S. Junior Track & Field Championships
RESULTS
DES MOINES, Iowa—Competing on the famous blue track at Drake University, Concordia University freshman Taylor Schmidt placed fifth overall in the decathlon at the United States Junior Track and Field Championships.
Schmidt scored 6,844 points for the fifth-place finish.
Schmidt, who recently placed eighth at the NAIA Outdoor National Championships with a school record 6,481 points, finished among the top 10 in seven events over the two-day competition. Schmidt scored his highest two finishes on the second day by tying for the top height in eh pole vault after clearing 14-9 and securing a third-place result in the javelin throw with a 177-7 toss.
Schmidt placed fourth in the 110-meter hurdles (14.82), fifth in the shot (43-0 1/4), sixth in the long jump (21-4 1/4) and seventh in the 100-meter dash (11.39).
Schmidt’s hurdle time netted him his highest total with 871 points and was followed by his mark in the 100 which generated 776 points.
Neaman Wise, a freshman at the University of South Florida won the competition with 7,300 points. Kevin Lazas, a recent Tennessee high school graduate and University of Arkansas signee, placed second with 7,291 points while Gunnar Nixson, a junior high schooler out of Edmond, Oklahoma, placed third with 7,137 points. With 7,144 points, Austin Bahner, a redshirt freshman at Wichita State, placed fourth overall.
