NU Inks Two Players for 2010-11 Season

KIRKLAND, Wash. – Northwest University’s women’s basketball coach, Lori Napier, announced the signing of two student-athletes for the coming 2010-11 season.

Domi Mendezona, a 5-6 point guard from Issaquah High School signed a national letter of intent to play for the Eagles and will be an incoming freshman this fall. As the only senior on the Issaquah team, she helped lead the Eagles to the 4A state tournament this past spring and played in the semi final game. She was a Kingco All-Conference Honorable mention for 2009-10, averaging 7 points per game and 3.5 assists.
 
“Domi is a true point guard who looks to get her teammates involved and is willing to do whatever it takes to make the team better,” stated NU Head Coach, Lori Napier. “She has excellent court vision and ball handling skills and comes from one of the best defensive high school basketball programs in the state. Her love of basketball and work ethic are outstanding and will help her transition seamlessly to the college game.”
 
Domi is the sister of NU graduating senior, Jessica Wilkerson, 2009-10 Cascade Conference Co-Player of the Year and Third Team NAIA All-American. Her older brother, Tyler Mendezona is a current player for the Northwest U. men’s team.
 
Also signing with the Eagles is Kia Gibson, a 6-0 transfer from Grand Canyon University in Phoenix, Arizona. Gibson will be a senior at NU and player her prep basketball at Lakeside High School in Spokane, Wash., and was a First Team Northwest “A” League award winner as a senior. She earned her Associates Degree at North Idaho College and in her sophomore season, played on the NIC team which won the Region 18 Championship and was named to the Region 18 All-Tournament team. The NIC team also played in the 2009 NJCAA Women’s Division I Championship tournament.
 
As a junior at Grand Canyon University, she earned NCAA Division II PacWest Player of the Week honors and was voted to the 2nd team PacWest All Conference Team. At GCU, Gibson led the conference in field goal percentage making 62% of her shots and was tied for 6th in the league in scoring, averaging 14.5 points per game.
 
“Kia has proven success at the college level,” commented Coach Napier. “We are excited for her to come in and make an immediate impact on our team. She is a strong center who is excellent at getting position under the basket. She goes up strong and is one of the best finishers I’ve seen.”
