Raiders Open 2010 With A Sweep
ASHLAND, ORE. -- The Southern Oregon volleyball team opened up the 2010 season with a 25-20, 25-17, 25-19 non-conference victory over Holy Names tonight at McNeal Pavilion.
Junior outside hitter Sarah Holgen led the Raiders with nine kills. Senior All-American Leah Bergstrom had seven kills and no errors and All-American setter Lindsey Stone turned in 31 assists and two kills in her first action in over a year.
Southern Oregon went on a 6-2 run in the first set to take a 15-7 lead and start to breakaway from the Hawks. An ace by Holgen and three Holy Names’ attack errors helped fuel the run.
In the second set, Bergstrom came off the bench to record three-straight kills and give the Raiders a 19-11 advantage. Bergstrom then teamed with Megan Bartling for a block to help close out the set.
Despite hitting -.026 in the third set, the Hawks tried to stay with the Raiders. A kill by Rebecca Chase and a pair of unforced SOU errors helped Holy Names take a 12-11 lead. Holy Names then cut a Raider advantage to 18-16 on a kill by Britany Silvia, but it was all SOU after that.
Holgen recorded four kills over the last seven SOU points to close out the match.
Red-shirt freshman Renee Yomtob led the Raiders with 25 digs, while senior Leanne Stennett recorded four kills and 11 digs.
Silvia and Chase led Holy Names with six kills each and Kayla Coleman had 13 digs.
Southern Oregon will host the Paul Elliott Invitational on Friday and Saturday. The Raiders open the Invitational at 10 a.m. on Friday against Montana Western and host Embry Riddle at 7:30 p.m.
