Cavaliers Defeat Eagles 5-0 in Concordia Clash
BOX SCORE
PORTLAND, Ore.—Scoring in spurts, the No.3-ranked Concordia (Ore.) women’s soccer team defeated Concordia (Cal.) 5-0 in a season-opening non-conference tilt at Delta Park on Friday evening.
The Cavaliers’ spree starting in the 22nd minute as Alex Thomas (Wilsonville, Ore.) fired a low strike from 12 yards out after nifty passing from teammates Brittany Orr (Federal Way, Wash.) and Kelton McFadden (Boise, Idaho). The home Concordia side struck again just 1:41 later as McFadden notched a goal of her own after a feed from Indigo Recker (Portland, Ore.).
Out of the gate in the second half, the Cavs put together another pair of goals in less than a two-minute span as Tahlia O’Loughlin (Boise, Idaho), a junior transfer from Walla Walla C.C., collected the ball deep in the opponents’ box en route to scoring at the 53:19 mark and Jackie Hendrickson (Colorado Springs, Colo.) followed with a score from 15 yards out at the 54:34 mark for a 4-0 advantage.
After setting up Hendrickson’s shot, Angie Turner (Salem, Ore.) registered a second assist by delivering the ball to senior forward Kaitlyn Tebbs (Bend, Ore.) in the 74th minute.
“It was a good start to the season,” Concordia (Ore.) head coach Grant Landy said. “We knew they were going to be athletic and organized, but we were able to put together some nice combinations and have good buildup to our goals,”
The Cavaliers outshot the Eagles 18-to-6, including a 7-to-1 advantage in the first half. Sophomore keeper Tori Talbutt (Boise, Idaho) played the full 90 minutes for her first career win and first career shutout. Talbutt stopped three shots while CU-Irvine counterpart Bekah Garvin (Sonora, Calif.) denied six shot attempts in the loss.
“The best stat of the night was that we had five different people score,” Landy said. “In order to be effective you have to be multi-dimensional. We were able to do that tonight by continuing the push forward.”
The Cavaliers return to action on August 29 when it faces Carroll College in a neutral match in Walla Walla, Wash. Kickoff is set for 11 a.m.
