Knights Fall Short in Season Opener
PORTLAND, Ore. - Concordia-Irvine used two goals by William Velasquez and a Warner Pacific own goal to squeek past the Knights 3-2 today at Portland Christian High School.
The Knights fall to 0-1 on the young season, while the Eagles improve to 3-0 with a trio of wins over Cascade Conference opponents.
Velasquez opened the scoring with a well placed 15 yard chip at the 5:50 mark. Warner Pacific answered just before halftime thanks to freshman striker Tarik Subasic finding the net from 5 yards out.
CU received a gift from the Knight defense in the 57th minute, as a WP defender headed an Eagle corner kick attempt in to his own net. 13 minutes later, Velasquez put the visitors two goals clear with an 8 yard tap after winning a scramble in front of the goal mouth.
Pressing forward late in the contest, the Knights gained one back after Joel Duenas headed a Jameson Jones free kick back across the box to a waiting Tyber Parsons, who knocked in the goal. The Concordia defense held firm the rest of the way however, to keep the Eagle record unblemished.
CU outshot the Knights 12-9 on the day, while each team earned 4 corner kicks.
Warner Pacific will next take the pitch on August 28th versus Willamette in a scrimmage match.
