LA GRANDE, Ore. – The Eastern Oregon University Department of Athletics announced the Athletic Hall of Fame inductees for 2010. The award winners will be recognized at the Alumni Honors Ceremony on Oct. 15 on the campus of Eastern Oregon University during homecoming activities.
Troy Williams will be inducted in the category of basketball. Williams attended and competed for Eastern Oregon University from 1992 to 1994 .Williams earned NAIA All-American honorable mention and was also a 1st team All- Conference player. Williams held the career assist record from 1994 to 2008 when it was broken by Jeremy Templeton. Williams was the team MVP and also captain while earning several conference player of the week honors and one national player of the week nod.
Neil Abel will be inducted in the sport of baseball. Competing from 1991 to 1994 Abel earned All-Conference first team recognition, as well as being named to the District 2 team and was Co Player of the Year in 1993. Voted team most valuable player twice Abel played one year professionally with the Tri City Posse in 1995. While at EOU Abel held various records including runs, hits, triples and RBI’s.
The 1999 and 2000 softball teams won Cascade Conference titles in both years with records of 14-4 and 13-3 respectively. Overall the teams amassed records of 41-11 overall in 1999 and 37-9 overall in 2000. The 1999 team placed 4th in the country at the NAIA national softball tournament. Four individuals were recognized as All-Americans.
The Alumni Honors Ceremony will take place at 7 p.m. in Hoke Main Lounge Friday, Oct. 15. A hosted reception will begin at 6 p.m. followed by the induction. Other awards include Community Service and Distinguished Alumni. The Ceremony is open to the public.
