McDonough's Two Goals Helps Corban Win
BOX SCORE
SALEM, Ore. – Freshman Tera McDonough scored goals in each half, as Corban's women's soccer team defeated Golden State Athletic Conference member Fresno Pacific, 3-2, in come-from-behind fashion Friday in Game #2 of the Phoenix Inn/Corban Classic played on Warrior Field.
McDonough started the game's scoring in the 5th minute with an unassisted strike from 25 yards out that eluded an on-chargin Fresno Pacific keeper for her second goal of the season. The first-year Warrior's shot would end up in the upper left corner of the goal therefore giving the host Warriors an early one-goal lead.
Fresno Pacific would strike back with a pair of goals by Tori Alvarez in the 16th and 27th minute, as she teamed with Jae Slocum on the first goal via a deflection off Corban's keeper. The second goal would come off a three-quarter clearing pass from the Sunbirds' keeper, Katie Blalock, before ending on the foot of Alvarez who went one-on-one with the Warriors' net-minder before depositing the ball into the lower left corner for a 2-1 Fresno Pacific lead.
The visiting Sunbirds would hold the one-goal advantage until the 82nd minute when McDonough teamed with sophomore Emily Tsugawa for her second goal of the game and third of the season. Tsugawa would begin the play by stealing the ball from a FPU defender and dribbling the ball along the endline before sending a pass to McDonough at the top of the box. Without hesitation, McDonough unleashed drilled a shot into the back of the net for the game-tying goal.
Just over four minutes later, Corban was awarded a corner kick that senior Katie Hanson took along the near sideline. On a perfectly placed pass, freshman Audrey Sullivan rose above Fresno Pacific's defense and headed the ball into the upper left corner for the game-winning goal and her team-leading fourth of the season.
Freshman goalkeeper Alexis Beattie would play the entire game and register three saves en route to picking up her fourth straight win, while Fresno Pacific's Blalock would grab a game-high seven saves despite suffering the heart-breaking loss.
With today's result, Corban remains unbeaten at a perfect 5-0-0 and Fresno Pacific drops to 1-3-0 on the season. The Warriors will return to action tomorrow – Saturday, September 11th – against Holy Names at 3:00 p.m. in the finale of the Phoenix Inn/Corban Classic.
