Eagles Get Second Straight Victory
KIRKLAND, Wash. - Northwest University's Stephanie Cummins headed one by the Willamette U. goalkeeper in the 82nd minute today as Northwest University shutout Willamette University, 1-0, this afternoon in a non-conference contest and earn their second straight victory.
Neither team could manage a goal in 10 first half total shots, but it was Cummins' header off a cross from teammate Yanet Candido from the left side that proved to be the game winner for the Eagles (2-0-2, 0-0).
Willamette goalkeeper, Kelli Gano saved a near goal in the 33rd minute of the first half as she stopped a shot by NU’s Kelsey Frasier, 4 yards out from the right side of the goal.
Each team had 5 shots on goal with Northwest goalie, Jessica Kane earning the shutout with her 5 saves on the day. WU’s Gano stopped four Northwest shots on goal for her four saves. NU out shot Willamette 15-10 and had 7 corner kicks to WU’s 2. The game got physical in the second half with a total of 18 fouls of the game’s 28 coming in the second period.
"I'm really proud of our ladies creating a lot of opportunities for us today," said Head Coach Erin Redwine. "I wish we could have scored a bit more on the opportunities they created, but our team played hard. Stephanie (Cummins) was our player of the game today with her efforts on the field and it was nice to see her rewarded with a well-earned goal," Redwine concluded.
Northwest now faces Trinity Lutheran College in a home and home series next week. The Eagles will host TLC on Friday, Sept. 17 at 4 p.m. and then travel to Everett on Sept. 18 to play Trinity once again at 7 p.m. in Everett's Memorial Stadium.
