Cavs Defeat Wildcats in Waning Moments
BOX SCORE
McMINNVILLE, Ore. - A Michael Chamberlain goal with 1:33 remaining lifted Concordia to a 2-1 victory over Linfield Saturday night at the Linfield soccer field.
After the two clubs played a scoreless first half, it was Concordia (3-1-0) that found enough offense over the final 45 minutes to escape with a big road win.
Chamberlain raced by the last line of Linfield (1-2-1) defenders, setting up a one-on-one opportunity with Linfield goalkeeper Jon Thompson. With the goalie to beat, Chamberlain took advantage of the opportunity, sneaking a shot into the bottom-right corner of the net.
The Cavaliers held a huge advantage in shot attempts, outshooting the Wildcats 17-6.
Mirza Ramic got the Cavaliers on the board in the 58th minute with an unassisted goal. After gaining possession on a deflected corner kick, Ramic laced a strike past Thompson.
Linfield had a quick answer to Ramic’s score, tying the match at one on a Michel Camacho goal in the 63rd minute.
“Linfield played very well tonight. They came out with a lot of energy and really worked at their game plot,” CU head coach Dan Birkey said. “We had to make several adjustments at half time due to their tact. The guys worked hard to get this win. Claudio Lazar came up huge for us in goal with several one-on-one saves from Linfield’s quick counter attacks. In the final minutes the goal from the Chamberlain and Sanchez combo was a fantastic finish for the team.”
Concordia outshot the Wildcats 8-2 in the first half, with Linfield receiving no corner kick attempts.
Lazar finished the night with three saves. Thompson tallied six saves in the loss.
Concordia returns to action on Sept. 17 when it hosts Oregon Tech at Delta Park. Opening kick is set for 6 p.m.
