Beacons Rebound for 1st CCC Victory
EUGENE, Ore. – One night after being defeated in four games by Evergreen State, the Northwest Christian University volleyball team put together one of their best matches of the season on Saturday, taking down Northwest University, 26-24, 13-25, 25-23, 17-25, 15-13.
“This was a much needed win for us,” said Head Coach Mike Gaffaney, “and it was a big win to get it against one of the top teams in our conference. We showed a lot of heart and passion. Statistically, we were beat in almost every category, but when you win a match like this it tells you just how bad the girls wanted it.”
The Beacons (4-6, 1-3 CCC) handed the Eagles (7-3, 2-1) their first CCC loss of the season behind 41 assists and 24 digs from freshman setter Cori Wallace. For the second straight match, Wallace broke NCU’s single-match record for assists, and also hit .455 with six kills. Freshman Middle Blocker Chelsie Joyce continued a strong week with 16 kills, hitting .316 in the match.
Janel Fetters added 14 kills and 19 digs for the Beacons and Danielle Nance ended the night with ten kills. The Beacons defense collected 94 total digs, including 21 from Dana Clark and 12 from Bridget Marasigan. Clark also added three service aces and four assists.
Northwest was led by Lauren Holtz with 18 kills and 11 digs. Lauren Ernster had a match-high 46 assists, along with 17 digs. Heather Shulke led all players with 35 digs and Sarah Stoker finished the night with seven blocks and 11 kills, hitting .364 in the middle. The Eagles out-blocked NCU 11-2 on the night.
The Beacons will be back in action next Friday as they travel to Salem to take on CCC rival Corban College.
