Knights Break Through, Defeat Evergreen 4-2
PORTLAND, Ore. – Warner Pacific men’s soccer earned their first win of the year with a 4-2 win over Evergreen State at David Douglas HS today. The game was the Cascade Conference opener for both teams.
The win improves the Knights to 1-3-1 overall, while Geoducks fall to 0-3-1.
The visiting Geoducks managed to strike first by way of a Brice Boum score in the 18th minute.
Joel Duenas brought the Knights even eight minutes later with a fantastic header from 15 yards out that looped over a leaping Evergreen keeper and found the back of the net. Brandon Tatum provided the crossing pass.
The score remained 1-1 until the 53rd minute when WP’s Juan Castillo cracked a bullet just inside the left post from 12 yards. Julian Esquivel was credited with the first of his two assists on the play.
Evergreen was undaunted and drew level thanks to Boum again, who found a seam in the Knight defense and finished left and low at the 65:23 mark.
Not to be denied, WPC tallied the game winning goal off the foot of Duenas, who ran onto a long punt from keeper Drew Bonifacio and scored with 19:50 remaining in the game.
The Knights then added an insurance goal in the 83rd minute thanks to Alex Patino, who scored his first collegiate goal after nice pass from Esquivel.
Bonifacio played all 90 minutes in goal and made one save on the day to earn his first collegiate victory. Christian Pettit stopped two shots in the losing effort.
The Knights will be back in action tomorrow, hosting Northwest at 4pm at David Douglas. Evergreen makes the long trip to College of Idaho.
