SEATTLE -- The Southern Oregon men's cross country team took down some NCAA Division I teams and the women upset seventh-ranked British Columbia today at the University of Washington Sundodger Invitational.

The NAIA's second-ranked men finished second to NCAA Division I Washington 27-75, but finished ahead of Idaho, Gonzaga, Western Oregon, Eastern Washington, Portland State, Seattle and Pepperdine.

The SOU women, ranked 26th in this week's NAIA poll, finished fourth - but finished one spot ahead of seventh-ranked British Columbia. Fourth-ranked Simon Fraser won the women's race, followed by Lewis-Clark State, Whitworth and SOU.

Senior David Laney led the SOU men with a seventh place finish with a time of 24:12. Zach Elliott finished 14th in 24:34, while Josh Seitz finished 24th (25:00), Ryan Ghelfi finished 25th (25:03) and Dennis McCaffrey finished 37th (25:29).

"I'm very impressed with the way we ran today, especially without James Johnstone," SOU head coach Brent Ericksen said. "David's time was amazing. He ran the first mile in 4:37, he was flying."

Seena Frantz and Laurie Stoutenburgh led the SOU women. Frantz finished 14th in 22:41 and Stoutenburgh finished 17th in 22:45.

Anya Martinez finished 21st for the Raiders in a time of 22:51, while Alex Rudd finished 38th in 23:23, Kristen Juveland finished 39th in 23:26 and Summer Cano finished 42nd in 23:28.

"That's the first time we've ever beaten British Columbia," Ericksen said. "We had a nice tight grouping and our one-through-seven ran within 59 seconds of each other."
