Sophomore Jenny Harman was one of three Warriors with seven kills Friday against rival NCU, as she collected her kill total on just 19 swings with one attack error.
Corban Keeps Streak Against Beacons of NCU
BOX SCORE
SALEM, Ore. – In the short five-year history between Corban and Northwest Christian, the Warriors' volleyball team has never lost against their conference rival Beacons in seven matches and that trend continued Friday night inside the C.E. Jeffers Sports Center thanks to three-set sweep.
Sophomore Chandra Baskoro (Gresham, Ore.) pushed her double-digit kill streak to four matches thanks to a match-high 13 kills, while three other Warriors – junior Tiffany Land (Independence, Ore.), sophomore Jenny Harman (Salem, Ore.), and freshman Bailey Wold (Spokane, Wash.) – added seven kills each in the win. Harman would post a .316 hitter percentage, as she tallied seven kills on just 19 swings with one attack error.
Junior Megan Dees (Tehachapi, Calif.) and sophomore Karisa Calderon (Murrieta, Calif.) would combine to run Corban's offense with 19 and 12 assists respectively, while freshman libero Bethany Durre (Bend, Ore.) registered 12 digs from her back row position. At the net, Land and Harman tallied two blocks each to go along with Calderon's one assist block.
Coming off their four-set win over Evergreen last weekend, Corban hit the floor running and built a 9-4 lead over the visiting Beacons on a kill from Calderon. Minutes later, Baskoro extended the lead, 13-4, with a well placed kill of her own. After faltering out of the gate, Northwest Christian rebounded from a 19-13 deficit, clawing their way back into the set. The Warriors would mantain a tedious lead, 22-21, on Wold’s kill and a slew of Northwest errors. Wold would close out the set in the Warriors favor (25-22) on her second kill of the night.
Set #2 saw both teams trading points to a 20-all tie. Neither team gained more than a two-point advantage until the Warriors took a 24-21 lead on a NCU attack error. After giving up two points, Baskoro put the set away on her eleventh kill of the match (25-23).
In the final set of the night, both teams struggled to gain a solid lead over the other, seeing ties at the 7, 9, and 12-point marks. Corban began to slowly start to pull away after Land forced two consecutive attack errors against the Beacon front line. Kills from Baskoro and Land sealed the set (25-19) and match for the Warriors.
In the losing effort, Janel Fetters tallied 12 kills for the Beacons. Additionally, Cori Wallace handed out a match-high 26 assists to go along with libero Dana Clark's match-high 18 digs.
With tonight's result, Corban improves to 4-3 overall and 2-3 in conference play. Meanwhile, Northwest Christian falls to 4-7 overall and 1-4 in league action. The Warriors will return to the court on Friday, September 24th, against Oregon Tech beginning at 7:00 p.m. in Klamath Falls.
