11 Earn Red Lion Player of the Week Honors

PORTLAND, Ore. -- Eleven student-athletes in the sports of volleyball, soccer, cross country and golf have earned Red Lion Player of the Week honors, the Cascade Collegiate Conference office announced Monday. Red Lion Hotels is the official hospitality sponsor of the CCC.
Volleyball
Hitter – Jessica Lea of Eastern Oregon University, a 5-8 junior from Prineville, Ore., was named the Red Lion Hitter of the Week. In three matches, Lea turned in an all-around effort, registering 37 kills, 58 assists and 30 digs to help the Mountaineers to a 2-1 record. Honorable mention: Anu Akamine, Northwest; Sarah Holgen, Southern Oregon; Raluca Dinca, Concordia; Emily Damschen, Warner Pacific; Ciciley Fox, College of Idaho; Jazzmin Garcia, Evergreen; Chandra Baskoro, Corban.
Setter – Madie Machurek of College of Idaho, a 5-4 senior from Eagle, Idaho, was named the Red Lion Setter of the Week. Machurek had an outstanding week for the Yotes, averaging more than 12 assists and nearly three digs per set in wins over Warner Pacific and Concordia. Honorable mention: Lauryn Ernster, Northwest; Emily Sampson, Eastern Oregon; Lindsay Mangan, Concordia; Megan Dees, Corban.
Libero – Heather Shulke of Northwest University, a 5-6 junior from Castle Rock, Wash., was named the Red Lion Libero of the Week. Shulke had 46 digs – including 29 vs. Southern Oregon – as the Eagles equaled last year’s win total (8) in just their 12th match of the season. Shulke ranks second in the CCC in digs. Honorable mention: Kaitlyn Duncan, Eastern Oregon; Aubrie Concannon, Concordia; Whitney Owen, College of Idaho; Chantal Petkus, Evergreen; Bethany Durre, Corban; Dana Clark, Northwest Christian.
Men’s Soccer
Offensive – Gus Bermudez of Corban University, a 5-9 junior forward from Culver City, Calif., was named the Red Lion Offensive Player of the Week. Bermudez helped lead the Warriors to a 1-1 record, as the first-year Warrior scored four goals and assisted on two others. He had a hat trick and an assist in a 4-2 win over Oregon Tech. Honorable mention: Wilber Velasco, Northwest; Denton Brown, Northwest Christian; Facundo Dipascuale, Concordia; Joel Duenas, Warner Pacific; Brian Buckingham, College of Idaho.
Defensive – Evan Denmark of Concordia University, a 5-11 junior defender from Renton, Wash., was named the Red Lion Defensive Player of the Week. Denmark helped CU post shutout victories over Oregon Tech and Northwest Christian, with the Cavaliers limiting the opposition to just 16 shots and three corner kicks. Honorable mention: Spencer Ward, College of Idaho; James Myrvold, Corban.
Women’s Soccer
Offensive – Tera McDonough of Corban University, a 5-6 freshman midfielder from Boise, Idaho, was named the Red Lion Offensive Player of the Week. McDonough helped lead the Warriors to a 2-0 record, as the first-year Warrior scored game-winning goals in victories over San Diego Christian and Embry-Riddle (Ariz.). Honorable mention: Yanet Candido, Northwest; Kennedy Roteman, Southern Oregon; Macy Egerman, College of Idaho.
Defensive – Jenna Peterson of Concordia University, a 5-6 junior defender from Federal Way, Wash., was named the Red Lion Defensive Player of the Week. With Peterson’s help, top-ranked Concordia held a pair of Top 10 teams without a goal, including holding No. 7 Martin Methodist scoreless for 110 minutes in a 0-0 tie. Peterson has helped fortify a CU defense which is unscored upon through eight matches. Honorable mention: Nikita Rivera, Warner Pacific; Alexis Beattie, Corban.
Cross Country
Men – David Laney of Southern Oregon University, a senior from Portland, Ore., was named the Red Lion Runner of the Week. In a Sundodger Invitational field dominated by NCAA Division I teams, Laney led the NAIA No. 2-ranked Raiders to a second-place team finish behind the University of Washington while finishing ahead of other Division I foes such as Idaho, Gonzaga, and Eastern Washington. Laney finished seventh individually in the 8K race, clocking a time of 24:12. Honorable mention: Damion Flores, Eastern Oregon; Dylan Zitzer, Concordia; Caleb Goins, Corban.
Women – Karlee Coffey of Eastern Oregon University, a sophomore from La Grande, Ore., was named the Red Lion Runner of the Week. Coffey won her second meet in a row, clocking a time of 19:01 to win the CCC Preview in Klamath Falls. Honorable mention: Seena Frantz, Southern Oregon; Alice Taylor, Concordia; Karissa Carlson, Evergreen; Christi Schmitz, Corban.
Golf
Men – Jesse Heinly of Concordia University, a freshman from Bend, Ore., was named the Red Lion Golfer of the Week. In his first collegiate tournament, Heinly opened with a one-over 73 and then proceeded to post lower scores (70-69) in his next two rounds to finish as the CCC’s low scorer at the Cavalier Classic in Prineville. CU finished second with a score of 861, the second-lowest recorded in the program’s eight-year history. Honorable mention: Andrew Johnson, Warner Pacific; Joey Duwe, Corban.
Women – Trish Gibbens of the College of Idaho, a sophomore from Caldwell, Idaho, was named the Red Lion Golfer of the Week. Gibbens recorded the lowest round (71) and 54-hole score (222) in C of I history in winning medalist honors at the Cavalier Classic. She defeated all players from last year’s Nos. 5 and 13 NAIA teams. She became the first Yote women’s golfer since 2001 to win an event. Honorable mention: Sara Molyneux, Concordia; Charli Bolt, Warner Pacific; Caley Hubert, Corban.
