Ranked Corban Blanks Eagles in Sweltering Heat
BOX SCORE
PHOENIX, Ariz. – Hours after receiving its first national ranking since September of 2005, Corban's women's soccer team stepped on a sweltering field against NAIA member Southwestern and shut out the host Eagles, 4-0, Tuesday at the Rose Morrow Sports Complex.
In temperatures that were in the triple digits, the Warriors concluded a three-game, five-day road trip in the state of Arizona with its eighth win of the season in its first nine games. Corban also ended the non-conference portion of its schedule with the program's best nine-game record ever.
After a scoreless opening twenty minutes, Corban got on the board in the 21st minute when freshman Rileigh Mankin (Manteca, Calif.) netted her third goal of the season and her second game-winner this year.
Corban would hold its one-goal advantage through halftime and increased that lead in the 54th minute when junior Rachel Cole (San Ramon, Calif.) scored her first goal of the season off an assist from freshman Michelle Clubb (Boise, Idaho) for a two-goal Warrior lead.
Just over three minutes later, Cole teamed with sophomore Emily Tsugawa (Gladstone, Ore.) for her fourth goal of the season that increased the Warriors' lead to three goals in the 57th minute.
In the 89th minute, freshman Emily Boudreau (Emerald Hills, Calif.) notched her first collegiate goal when she teamed with fellow freshman Audrey Correa (Riverside, Calif.) for the game's final score.
Freshman Alexis Beattie (Brea, Calif.) and junior Amber Kliewer (Fox Island, Wash.) split time between the pipes for the Warriors, as Beattie did not register a save during the first half in which Corban's defense did not give up a shot and Kliewer snagged two saves in the second half. Meanwhile, Southwestern's Michelle McFarland grabbed a game-high 13 saves despite allowing four goals and suffering the loss.
With today's win, Corban improves to 8-1-0 this season and Southwestern sees its overall record falls to 2-4-0. The Warriors will return to the field when the team embarks on their nine-game Cascade Collegiate Conference schedule beginning on Friday, October 1st, against Oregon Tech at 4:00 p.m. in Klamath Falls.
