Doremus, Dinca Lead Cavaliers in Sweep

NEWBERG, Ore.—Behind 27 kills from the senior duo of Raluca Dinca and Erika Doremus, Concordia defeated George Fox 3-0 (25-20, 25-23, 25-15) in non-conference volleyball action held at the Wheeler Sports Center on Tuesday night.
With the results, CU improved to 7-6 on the year while George Fox fell to 5-7.
Doremus (Port Orchard, Wash./South Kitsap H.S.) tallied 14 kills against just two errors to hit a team-best .522 while Dinca added 13 kills on 32 attempts for a .312 rate to help CU hit .352 as a team in the sweep.
After a 5-4 lead in the first, CU erupted for a 14-7 run to stake a 19-11 lead. The Bruins fought back to within a pair of points with the score 21-19 but the Cavs settled the set with the help of a pair of kills from Doremus.
The second set featured six ties, the last at 15-all, before George Fox received back-to-back kills from Amanda White which led to the home side staking a 19-16 lead. A Betsy Wilhelm kill got the Bruins to within three points of squaring the match at 1-1, but the Cavaliers finished strong with five of the final six points to steal its second win.
The Bruins once again got off to a quick start in the third set, eventually generating a 10-8 lead, but CU pulled away in dominated fashion by holding George Fox to five points the rest of the way as the Cavs went on a 17-5 run to conclude the match.
Down by two midway through the third, the Cavs posted seven straight points that included three kills from Dinca and two more by Clair Thiel (Oak Harbor, Wash./Oak Harbor H.S.).
Lindsay Mangan (Huntington Beach, Calif./Mariana H.S.) finished with 37 assists while Dinca and Aubrie Concannon (Portland, Ore./Rex Putnam H.S.) registered 10 digs to share the team lead.
White led the Bruins with nine kills while Eliza Pledger added eight as GFU was outhit .353 to .204.
Concordia returns to action on Friday, Sept. 24 when it hosts Northwest University in a return to Cascade Collegiate Conference play. The following day, CU hosts Evergreen State College inside the Cavalier Gymnasium. Both matches are set to begin at 7 p.m.
