LA GRANDE, Ore. – The Eastern Oregon University women’s soccer team drew even with Trinity Lutheran College Wednesday, 2-2.
The Mountaineers (0-2-1) shot a school record 68 times in the tie. That mark also tied a Cascade Collegiate Conference record with Oregon Tech shooting 68 times against Simpson University in 2004. EOU put 24 shots on goal, but TLC goalkeeper, Savannah Wood, made 22 saves in the match. The Eagles had a total of nine shots, putting two on goal, and both found the back of the net.
In the first meeting between the schools, Eastern and Trinity Lutheran played a scoreless two extra periods after drawing even after 90 minutes. TLC (3-3-1) had two shots in the first half compared to Eastern Oregon’s 28. The Mountaineers outshot the Eagles 25-7 in the second half, and 15-0 in the two extra periods.
Mauriana Gonzalez and Lauren Robideau had 14 shots each, Gonzalez put six on the net and Robideau had five on goal. Robideau and Amanda Swenson scored Eastern’s goals, and Kayla Kliphardt scored both of Trinity Lutheran’s goals. Kliphardt had three shots in the contest.
Stephanie Gonzalez assisted Kliphardt’s first goal in the 14th minute with a floater over the Eastern Oregon goalkeeper. The Mountaineers evened the score in the 36th minute when Swenson capitalized on an Erika Whitehurst assist.
The Eagles scored six minutes into the second half when Wood found Kliphardt on a long kick out from the TLC net. Robideau tied the match in the 61st minute with a Rachael Collins assist. EOU had eight corner kicks, while Trinity Lutheran had three. The Mountaineers had 13 fouls to the Eagles’ 10.
“I will not fault our effort, especially in the two overtimes,” Eastern Oregon head coach Keith Scarlett said. “We started to play a little crisper and move the ball better. It was one of those games in our sport where we just couldn’t crack the seal. A lot of that is credited to Trinity Lutheran’s committed defending in our area.”
Eastern travels to Caldwell, Idaho Saturday to play Westminster College (Utah) on a neutral field. Kickoff is scheduled for 3 p.m. MT.
