No. 13 Southern Oregon Sweeps Cavs
BOX SCORE
PORTLAND, Ore.— For the second straight day, No.13-ranked Southern Oregon swept its conference opponent as the Raiders defeated Concordia 3-0 (25-19, 25-22, 25-19).
With the result, SOU improved to 5-2 on the year and 2-0 in the Cascade Collegiate Conference while CU fell to 3-5 overall and 1-1 in league play.
A day after easily handling Warner Pacific, the Raiders met a stubborn Cavalier team trying to defend its home floor.
After a kill by Erika Doremus (Port Orchard, Wash./South Kitsap H.S.) brought Concordia to within two with the score 12-10, the Raiders placed a 7-3 run highlighted by a pair of kills from Leah Bergstrom (West Linn, Ore./West Linn H.S.) on the board to separate from the home team en route to the 25-19 Win.
Another Doremus kill brought the Cavs to within four (22-18) but a Sarah Holgen (Honolulu, Hawaii/Ashland H.S.) swing ended the thoughts of a CU comeback.
A comeback, however, was needed in the second game as the Cavs erupted for a 7-1 start as Raluca Dinca (Portland, Ore./David Douglas H.S.) and Mariah Raudsepp (Dundee, Ore./C.S. Lewis Academy) each posted a pair of early kills.
Southern Oregon would eventually tie the game at 10-10 and the two teams stayed within a single point of each other until the Raiders converted three straight points to stake a 16-14 advantage. A CU kill by Raudsepp tied the affair at 21-21 but the Raiders held the Cavs to a single point down the stretch for the 25-22 win.
In the third game, Concordia once again captured the early and held off the Raiders until a Bergstrom kill handed SOU an 18-17 lead. Holding the Cavs to .098 hitting in the decisive game, the Raiders finished the match with an 8-2 run for the 25-19 win.
With the help from a match-high 16 kills from Holgen and10 more from Bartling, SOU senior setter Lindsey Stone (Ashland, Ore./Ashland H.S.) tallied 41 assists to lead the floor. With both players taking 21 attempts, Bergstrom had eight kills and Leanne Stennett (Encinitas, Calif./San Dieguito H.S.) added seven as the Raiders hit .304 for the match.
Stennett and teammate Renee Yomtob (Boise, Idaho/Centennial H.S.) shared the match high with 14 digs.
Dinca and Doremus paced the Cavs with 10 kills each and were followed by five kills from Raudsepp, Lindsay Mangan (Huntington Beach, Calif./Marina H.S.) and Clair Thiel (Oak Harbor, Wash./Oak Harbor H.S.).
Mangan chipped in with a team-high 27 assists and junior libero Aubrie Concannon (Portland, Ore./Rex Putnam H.S.) snared a team-high 11 digs.
Concordia returns to action on Wednesday when it hosts Northwest Conference member a cross-town foe Lewis & Clark College. SOU will return home to host Eastern Oregon on Sept. 10.
