CU's Angie Turner recorded her third assist in four games on Sunday against Rocky Mountain.
No. 3 Concordia Settles for 1-0 Win over Rocky
BOX SCORE
BEAVERTON, Ore.— Despite only a single goal to show for 22 shot attempts, the No. 3-ranked Concordia women’s soccer team held on to defeat Rocky Mountain College 1-0 in non-conference action held at PCC Rock Creek on Sunday.
With the win, Concordia improved to 4-0-0 on the season while RMC fell to 2-1-0 on the year.
After being held to three shot attempts in the first half, the Cavaliers fired 19 attempts in the second half as the team consistently applied pressure on the visiting back line.
The stubborn defense from the Bears finally cracked in the 66th minute of play as CU seniors Angie Turner (Salem, Ore./Cascade H.S.) and Kaitlyn Tebbs (Bend, Ore./Bend H.S.) connected for the eventual game-winning goal.
Settling the ball in the middle of the pitch, Turner sliced a pass through a pair of defenders to Tebbs, who rocketed a shot past the outstretched arms of RMC keeper Malin Johansson (Henan, Sweden) and into the upper right corner of the net.
“I thought we showed a good ability to counterattack with getting numbers forward,” CU head coach Grant Landy said. “Tebbs was by herself and Angie (Turner) put a great ball through to her.”
Concordia goalkeeper Tori Talbutt (Boise, Idaho/Capital H.S.) easily scooped up the drive for one of her two saves on the day which ended with her fourth straight shutout to start the season.
Johannson also turned in a quality performance in goal with eight saves for the Bears.
Rocky Mountain created early chanced in the first half as Kirsty Montignani (Dunfermline, Scotland) was able to find enough space at the 4:50 mark to launch a 30-yard shot towards the net.
“Rocky Mountain came out with a lot of energy and didn’t settle down and play like we know we can,” Landy said. “We were a completely different team in the second half. We didn’t finish well but we created a lot of great chances which is the first thing you have to worry about. The finishes will come.”
The Bears finished with four total shots with three attempts occurring in the second half.
“Our back line has been playing with a lot of confidence, but the one thing I like about this team is that we haven’t put together a full 90 minutes yet,” Landy said. “The last two games we did not play particular well in the first half, but I give the team credit for making the adjustments and turning things around for positive outcomes.”
Concordia returns to action on Sept. 10 when it faces Holy Names in a neutral match in Salem, Oregon as part of the Corban Classic. The Cavs return the following day to face Fresno Pacific. Both matches are set to begin at noon.
Concordia defeated Holy Names 3-1 last year in the opening round of the NAIA National Tournament.
